Can't say I've had this issue before
Yeah they may want to rethink that, in the day and age these updates tend to be more unpopular.
I thought they did, in the "pause updates while playing" prompt.
Anyways, there is a setting that you can use to prevent Steam from downloading anything while that particular game is open. I usually use it for MP games.
Edit: like Rangers suggested right above me too, as I can see now.
The download is only part of what's happening. Stuff is being written to disk, shoved into/out of RAM, and CPU is being used to decompress/decrypt the data. Especially if you don't have beefy hardware, it could definitely hit FPS.
Obviously, if we compare usual Internet speeds from year 2000 and now in 2025, the difference is astounding.
Yeah that strategy could cut down on the amount of resources it is using and leave enough to be unnoticeable.
