Steam OS VR for other headsets
I hope there is a wide enough interest as well as enough talented people interested in bringing the Steam OS to other headsets. The final act of power John Carmack used before leaving Facebook/Meta was to have Oculus/Facebook/Meta unlock the Oculus Go. We still haven't seen anything interesting happen using this, but there hasn't been another VR OS someone could possibly port to the Oculus Go.

At this point, Facebook/Meta/Oculus has flooded the market with cheap ARM based headsets, and a huge number of them are past their support timeline. It would be pretty cool of Oculus/Meta/Facebook(I'm just going to call it OMF from now on) to open up these older headsets they no longer with to support. I'm sure many headsets could get dusted off and repurposed as SteamVR headset running SteamOS natively. I have a couple of Quest 2 headsets and a Quest 3 headset. I would absolutely LOVE to purge all firmware from these headsets and just run SteamOS.

This obviously opens a massive can of worms. There's plenty of arguing to be had on this topic. No way OMF goes the "good guy" route of opening up their old hardware. Which brings us to the hopeful proposition of finding a way to open it up unofficially, and having a port of SteamOS ported to these headsets, unofficially. This isn't absolutely impossible, but it's a ton of hard work and would need a ton of very talented people to really dedicate their free time to make it happen within a few years. If only there was some kind of "Right to Repair" movement that had enough traction to pass legislation that would force companies to do the right thing...
