Steam really needs a OS-independent lite client.

Now that Windows 11 is "mandatory" outside of EU (EU gets extended security updates), valve should really release a lite client that works on any OS that they supported in the past, including all the Linux and MacOS versions.

What do I mean under Lite Client? A simple client that requires you to log in and allows you to download and play your games. Nothing else.

Windows 11 isn't mandatory. You can keep using Win10 for years to come and it won't be an issue.

Valve are not going to release a small client that they will have to make work on ALL previous OS. It is not feasible. What works on Win95 might not work on Win7. What works on Linux might not work on Vista.

Also they'd then have 2 clients to keep updated.

All modern OSes can receive files, no? What exactly do you think "needs to work"? Simple login-screen, your game list + a download button? All possible on Windows 98 and up, Security is all handled via 2FA/Authenticator anyways.

I don't think a lite client would be hard to update for a company of Valve's caliber.

Been saying that for years. Like you could use a modern smart phone to verify and perform validation checks, then have it push the download to your lite client on your PC.

Exactly this. Besides, If I bought a game on a Windows 7 machine, that still works on a Windows 7 machine, I should be able to play it on that said Windows 7 machine. I don't think a middleman should be the decisive force on how the user wants to access their purchased product tbh, but if they want to, then a lite client is the way to go.

You can get esu outside of Europe as well.... you just have to pay for it, as the esu stuff was mainly intended for companies which can not switch that easy.

ms only made it available for end consumers as well.

How does Valve get around the lack of support for modern server technologies? Your lite client does would have to communicate with their servers.

Enable old and outdated protocols that can create major security risks on their servers? Pretty sure that won't be happening ever.

You are free to stay glued to the past, but the world will keep moving forward.

What protocols? Again, it's all controlled via valve's servers, 2FA, Authenticator, Steam Guard...

no thanks, im affraid we are not allowed to put wallpaper on steam OS if it has woman’s behind image, windows 10 still work fine nobody use 11 and called it masterpiece

You'll be forced to use Windows 11 eventually. Look at Windows 7 users and the steps they have to take just to access their paid-for games...

the reason you need win 10 or newer is because the chromium embedded framework removed support for windows 7, the same framework is used by every major dev, publisher, game engine and launcher.

official support for windows 7 ended in 2023, Valve ended support in 2024, time to upgrade or be left behind.

valve isn't going to make a downgraded client that would expose them to security risks.
