It's not gonna be easy to get Dad into PC or Console gaming this late, particularly if he knows nothing about games, how controls work, etc.
Phones may be a better idea.
Unless it's something he really wants to learn and do.

It's like those old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 70s and 80s. As a visual novel, you don't have to learn any game mechanics. It's well-written and weird, which is excellent if he's into Lovecraftian stuff.

This is great for people who enjoy just having fun and creating pretty landscapes. It seems inspired by board games where you place tiles, which makes it a natural choice for someone who's already into board games.

It uses the familiar mechanics of a slot machine to make something completely new that isn't gambling. It's more like a deck-building card game. It's easy to learn but tricky to master.
I'm sure there's other stuff, but I don't know what he's into.
Fairly chill game, and though it has Family Sharing you can't share and play at the same time- so you'll both have to have a copy. No combat, but there are ways to die. Not permadeath unless you choose to play permadeath- so you can start him out on an easier mode, learn the game together and move up to a higher difficulty if he's interested. Requires some strategy, so you'll need to use a little brain power to solve some basic puzzles to unlock new tech and items, but nothing mind-bending. He will have to learn how to use the camera and move through the world on foot and later int he game when you unlock the Rover- how to drive the Rover around. But it's a pretty game, lots of base building, lots of exploration, and more interesting than having him start on a Match 3 game. The game isn't competitive, but the community can be at times. Not really toxic community- just aggressively "My base is better than your base!" at times.
It was released about 30 years ago. Your dad would have been about 30 when it came out and likely played it. Think you have to Lan Cable two PC's to multiplayer it.
Got tons of hours in to it but game is in maintenance mode.
I'm no judge of games for old men just because I'm 65. I grew up playing video games, and am playing pubg so...
Right, but even that game he has to know controls and stuff.
I was looking at someone our age on YT, that never played these 3D games, and only played like those colored peg games on the computer.
He decided to try "Minecraft", and needless to say, it was hilarious to watch, but at times painstakenly frustrating, being he didn't even know the key to "walk".
And so i think we take for granted our knowledge of at least the "basics" and how important that is to be able to get into these games.
Anyway, most here cannot do simple maths. So troll away...
I call BS
Which is the bs? Not knowing the controls if you never played before?
yea, i would rule out any 1st/3rd person game if someone never played games before.
