I didn't say anything about the age of my account, or using that as a means of verification.

What did you expect support to do? Support is not Valve but a 3rd party company.
They have the same info from Valve on the system that you do. They can’t change, remove, or add methods to it.
How is the government going to keep tabs on people when the age verification system is not run by the government?
In Steams case, the age verification is carried out by the banks when you apply for a credit card. It's always been that way. Nothing has changed.
The people salty about it are just particularly loud about it.
From what people have been saying, there is nothing to stop you placing a credit card on the account, buying the game and installing it, then removing the card. It will only stop you accessing forums. And if you want to access a forum you could temporarily enter the card number again.
