Today I saw posts from a person with a new Steam account who started participating in the forum less than 24 hours ago and in many discussions he publishes some strange posts, baits (i.e. I'll give something for free) just to attract attention and has already managed to collect a dozen or so Steam rewards just for nothing
Only allow awards for reviews, artworks, screenshots and so on.
NOT for forum posts. That was the worst idea Steam ever had and has turned nearly the entire forums, be it the official ones or the game subforums into toxic cesspools.
But it's definitely malicious feature in Discussions
Not to mention whole wall-of-AI-text topics right here.
A simple radio button like this:
Naturally, the "shut up and take my points" award should be exempted from this.
Every stories have two sides, though. On one side, you have aggressors with awards and then we have jester farmers. There is no way to win without bad impact...
1. It provides a venue for harassment. Currently via the jester award, but another award could take its place if that one were removed.
2. It provides an incentive to misbehave, by rewarding misbehavior with points and higher visibility.
An option to withhold points would be addressing the latter but it would also be enabling the former.
Maybe the better option would be to do away with award badges and make the system purely about gifting points, so that it's unambiguously positive.
This is also another good idea. Hide awards from posts and profile. If they're supposed to be a positive thing only, there's no bad sides to choose which we want to show.
Does that really help?
It really feels like moderation only acts after a user has been reported dozens of times. The new point system seems to have opened the floodgates for all sorts of problematic behavior, and it’s worrying how much goes unchecked.
Steam was a better place before they introduced those awards.
I mean you could still use Steam points for cosmetic stuff but just remove all awards.
Nobody needs them.
