They have a way if you're in the UK and need it: credit card. Given how methods requiring more personal information have already been breached, do you really want to trust a corporation with that information just to buy a few niche porn games?

They already said they don't want a credit card, so stop trying to advertise credit cards to people.

Currently Steam only accepts Credit Card as proof of age. They chose it because they already had a system for accepting credit cards so it was the simplest way to implement age verification. Whether or not they plan to implement more ways over time we'll have to wait and see. We likely won't hear about it until any new system goes live though. That's just how Valve works. They pretty much never talk about what they are working on.

or profile age on to steam.

Profile age is not accepted form of verifying users age. You'll need to petition your government to amend the law if you want that to be accepted age verification method though I doubt they will as there is no way to verify the user using the account is actually same age as the account. It could be your 5 year old brother for all they know.

They are not advertising credit cards, they pointing out the reality of the situation.

The Ofcom requirements are:

1) Age assurance methods – which include age verification, age estimation or a combination of both – must be ‘highly effective’ at correctly determining whether a particular user is a child.

2) They include: open banking, photo ID matching, facial age estimation, mobile network operator age checks, credit card checks, digital identity services and email-based age estimation;

Valve have chosen credit card as they have the payment processes in place and Ofcom only requires one method to be used.

They are not advertising credit cards, they pointing out the reality of the situation.

The primary revenue source of credit card companies is generated from interest on debt owed on credit cards. This would not be a viable business model if the vast majority of people used credit cards in a way which would avoid accruing debt.

Therefore it is reasonable to say that someone encouraging people who don't want credit cards because they don't want to get into debt by telling them how easy it is to "use responsibly" and how stupid they'd have to be to use it the way that the entire industry relies on them using, is someone who has the agenda of advertising credit cards to people whenever they recommend either prescriptively or descriptively, credit card adaptation anytime they bring it up in the future.

Especially when the people they're talking to explicitly say they don't want it ahead of time.

Don't advertise credit cards to people who don't want them, don't defend those who do.

And that's their choice. But they make it knowing they can't buy the niche porn games anymore. And if they don't like that, they should be taking active measures to force the British government to drop the stupid nanny state law that caused this in the first place.

This is the correct action to take. Have a shooting star.

Even if you already have them set to off it does not help, steam still tries to show you games that fall under the UK on line safety act ,with no option other then to provide a credit card, you cannot skip them etc. to see other games.
