Games cannot be updated on Windows 7, ie cannot be launched
Steam has seemingly changed their compression / delivery scheme, anjd older clients cannot process it. Downloads either say corrupt or they freeze ~113.7 MB in. Unless you keep the client in offline mode, when an update is found, it blocks it from being launched again. If steamworks API has to update, it blocks any game that incorporates it from launching as well. A solution to this is setting steamworks API to download, then clearing cache. Restart, it stops trying to update it until a game that relies on it starts updating. This doesn't solve the problem with other games however.

I'm not sure why this had to happen. Supermium (chromium / webkit) fork still supports Windows 7. Either way if it's going to lock out games permanently simply because they aren't patched, I suppose the case for non-DRM has never been clearer. You shouldn't have to fight with your game launcher because it "moved on" from the OS you use.

It's not like Valve hasn't provided ample warning about the possibility of the client's functionality breaking on pre-10 versions of Windows. Your reluctance to move on is holding you back.

I'm thinking of how to use a VM environment to patch, then rollback the client and set to offline mode.
You've probably noticed that offline mode doesn't last forever and you have to get back online to start steam in offline mode again.(I guess that prevents some type of theft, but they should let you set it up how you like).
gl playing online only games

you can backup your offline only steam files on separate drive and store in a safe place unconnected from your pc and backup to pc whenever it breaks

Yep. I think it lasts a pretty long time these days though. At least several months.

I mean that’s a key advantage that DRM free has over platforms like Steam but you cannot expect a live service that relies on the internet to continue functioning forever on this relic of an OS.
Especially when Valve has given multiple warnings about end of support
I would just move to 10/11 or look into Linux instead if the state of current Windows isn’t suitable for ya (cannot blame you)

Also Supermium is a special modified fork of mainline Chrome which does replace the API calls and adds workarounds to support older OSes something that Valve cannot do as it will break the guidelines and put users at risk when it comes to security. There is a difference when an individual does the change for themselves vs a corporation enforcing such modified client on everyone

Eventually it was bound to happen. Unsupported versions don't last forever.

if you refuse for whatever reason to upgrade your Windows, you always can switch to a Linux distribution if you not need stuff which would not run there.

So running Windows XP is good?

And yet you were happy enough to agree to that clause in the terms of service when you made your account and every time you bought a game on Steam. Why is that?

I made my account 19 years ago. To say I "happily" click agree on any EULA/terms of service is also a mischaracterization, made so that you can portray me as labile ie rapidly oscillating between extremes. This is a dehumanization tactic you probably picked up from the media and other people who have been similarly contaminated.
