How you can claim its not needed when you don't know what it does?

because most of the functions steam needs to do can be preformed by many different applications and programming languages without the need for a service running in system.
it's usually when people need deeper system access/driver mediators that they go this route.

Ok, but you said most there. What are the steam functions that do need a service?

I uninstalled the Steam service with 'sc delete' and Steam works fine. It shows a popup when you start Steam that the Steam service is not working but you can just press cancel.

Would be nice if there was a way to disable that popup.

Can you install and uninstall games without the Service?

I installed a game just fine just now. I guess there might be some functionality or feature that won't work but I haven't run into any yet.
