Valve, Gambling Mechanics and Dean Hall
About time someone spoke out about this:

“Valve does not get anywhere near enough criticism': DayZ creator Dean Hall says the 'gambling mechanics' of Valve's monetization strategy 'have absolutely no place' in videogames

By Lincoln Carpenter published 17 hours ago

Are we all letting Valve off easy for its loot crate economy?”

PCGAMER finish with this:

“One way or another, TF2 hats have a lot to answer for.”

Which they helped promote!

PCGamer, in 2010 gave this £30 bundle of crap a review score of 81.

They said this:

“You can buy individual weapons for anywhere between 60p and £3, and hats cost as much as £12.”

Now in 2025, PCGamer say “One way or another, TF2 hats have a lot to answer for.”

Absolute bunch of…

MTX such as skins, items, lootcrates, battlepasses, in-game currency etc are not originally from nor unique to Valve.

I don't buy lootcrates anyway, if I like a specific item or skin for a game I buy it directly from the Dev or the Steam Community Market. If they have no place in games, everyone believing such should vote with their wallet, but if it's popular it'll likely remain unless regulated out of existence.

I can’t defend Valve on this.

Why would you to begin with?
On one hand, exploiting child gambling addiction is evil. On the other hand, neither a child, nor a gambling addict should be playing video games with gambling in them. If they didn't, then all those loot boxes would never be a successful monetization strategy. So why do they play it and pay for it? How does a child get the money to purchase loot boxes? Why a gambling addict lacks support in fighting the addiction? The germ of loot boxes is bad but the lack of natural immunity to it in certain parts of society is worse, and any politically-motivated regulation will be as harmful to the patient as it would be to the disease, if not more. Look at UK, I mean.
It's everywhere on the internet nowadays.
I have one browser without adblocker & I'm getting spammed by ads about gambling any time I use it

Now, do you think there might have been some staff turnover in the last 15 years?
Dean Hall is a scammer who has had a beef to pick with steam for a long time. Take a good hard look at stationeers, you okay with a game in early access with DLC that costs more than the game by a huge margin?

Not to mention the abandonment of DayZ when he couldn't finish it himself.
