Thinking about it, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are really the "I play alone" games on Switch. Playstation 4 and 5 has Bloodborne, Demon Souls, and Astro Bot seems to be more stronger "lone wolf" style.
There no laws that prevent you from sharing your PC, or accounts, there are rules by services for sharing account, but Steam literally has FAMILY group share.
Another thing to point out, Sony, Nintendo, & Microsoft are slowly cutting out physical media, and pushing more for digital focus, which funny enough more & more people buying digital than physical media, and got those game passes which adds on that. Think about it Digital only console, digital download despite having the physical media which doesn't hold the actual game, kind of a given at this point.
I find Nintendo subscription kind of a dumb joke to tricking the users to pay they never own on the system, think about it, why do you think Nintendo made Super Mario 3D All Stars a limited fixed supply despite knowing they will sell out, here the kicker there a digital version of it on eShop, but they REMOVED it from the eShop despite they can literally sell infinite digital copies. What funny is they choose not to sell these said games that offer via Nintendo Online, locking them behind a subscription pay wall instead of providing a choice to buying said game to keep on the Switch.
Here a problem with gamepass for PSN/Xbox some 3rd party games may leave gamepass which you have no control, or say really, and the longer you keep paying to keep your subscription active the more that racks up overtime, until you realized, you could've just bought all the games you wanted to play. Some people care, some don't care, and overtime people may regret later depending how much someone blew, vs getting the better deal.
There might be some possibilities that maybe Microsoft may take their Xbox towards the similar path as Valve with Steam.
So far I have Gamecube, Wii, PS2, and PS3. All of the games are discs, and I never purchased any digital games. When I got the used original Wii, there is a digital Bubble Bobble game already included. I felt bad for the previous owner can't re-download that game again if he/she decides to use Wii U.
i never had any "Game Online Subscriptions" in my entire life, and no intentions of paying for that for rest of my life. Indeed, it is a weird concept to pay month by month to play multiple games instead of purchasing the one game upfront, and then play them whenever i want, and however I want, forever with no monthly, and yearly fees. Game prices by itself gets lower year by year, and there are 50% to 90% sales on Steam on top of that. So why monthly subscription fees on consoles goes up as more time passes by?
Xbox Play Anywhere program. This program is what I am going to use mainly for my future Xbox Series X if it goes well. Xbox Play Anywhere is the alternative if something went wrong with Steam. Though as of now, I have only four games like Doom the Dark Ages, Atomfall, Deathloop, and Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered Wishlisted. Since even Steam Deck with the Dock Mode more likely have trouble handling Doom the Dark Ages than Xbox Series X.
I still use my same gaming pc without any upgrades since 2017.
They won't
And you do realize similar games are already available for STeam deck and likely Xbox.
They won't They're chasing the same 'better specs' rainbow
There's already significant overlap.
And given what's happening with Gamepass, I expect there will be some changes to Play anywhere as well.
Meanwhile the future is not now and you're not going to get any of that "potential"...
The draw back is the options what you can do, less freedom of choice, and may be bound to buying 2nd hand only for discontinued products with value fluctuating by supply & demand, where one game can be costing low as $5 used online, while another game can be costing $$$ used online. I can't say other option people take without getting into trouble here.
Microsoft already has their store on PC since Windows 8 2012, including their Xbox game app on PC 2019.
I own SNES ~ Switch been gaming for 30+ years, only family wanted said exclusives for recent consoles, else I wouldn't have bought them at all.
Thing is people on console had no choice, but to pay subscription if want multiplayer access that been thing for longest time on Xbox OG with xbox gold, and PS4 for PSN, which Nintendo decided do same thing on the Switch, basically Greed won in the long run.
What funny Sony offer subscription on PS3 from 2010, what they offer was cloud save support, exclusive discounts, and monthly free games “Instant Game Collection” which only keep access to those games you claim via PSN+ as long renewal it. It was their way to compete with Xbox gold, and then Microsoft started offer same thing just like the “Instant Game Collection” but in the end if want multiplayer have to pony it up these days.
Funny enough Steam provided same features, plus much more for free, and there hasn't been any subscription, it's nuts Steam barely any real competitors for almost 20 years, only competitors they even remotely had was Gog & Epic, most people didn't want to use Microsoft store due to being slow, huge mess to navigate, and that including finding your library you bought on Microsoft store which they have to revamp multiple times, which still not good, which why they just made xbox app instead. In the long run people that stick to PC end up having most value in saving, with backwards compatibility support on majority of the games, no need of having own multiple systems just to play a game, and many communities make effort to give support to games that has issue from translate layer on rendering, to patching game files.
Cloud gaming nice, but it's not great if don't have stable internet, or good wifi, prefect for those that looking for cheapest way to get into modem gaming, as can use any device that can handle streaming, and some kind of controller to connect to it for the best experience to playing the game via the service. And yeah Steam deck isn't anywhere strong as Xbox series X due to being portable & lightweight, Steam deck fall between Switch 1 & 2 in terms of performance due to hardware choice, and price point, for game performance on steam deck it upto the game publisher to optimize their game much like that of on console. Some games are recommended run at either 30 or 60 FPS at 720p ~ 900p on Steam deck with settings range from low to med.
Lastly yeah that cool part of PC, don't have to upgrade unless want to, so can play modem games basically if it can handle it to running them, console you're just SOL, and have to buy new system if want modem games, as often when new console gen release they slowly kill off their last gen, making games only for next gen.
