From what I’ve seen locked, it could be as soon as two or three months

It's a bit of a gray area.

As I see it, if a post has been quiet for several weeks and is bumped without actually adding anything valid to the topic, it's a necro.

But if somebody replies with something productive which naturally continues the topic, it might still be a necro but it's totally fine.

The problem is, people will often post something and then be told "why start a new topic? Don't you know how to use the search button?" But then if they DO search and find a topic they're looking for, they get "nice necro, why revive that when you could just start a new topic?

As a general rule of thumb, if somebody posts something in an older thread that's on-point, current, and relevant to the topic, it shouldn't be an issue.

Depends on the speed of the forum imo.
Mods usually treat anything over a month old as a necro

I say if it's over a month old and the thread isn't on the best page, don't respond to it. The people who think they're contributing usually just added something asinine

What if I create a thread on the last day of the year and bump it next day.

there's nothing in the rules about necro, so any claim of necro is false.
locked for "old and confusing" is simply lazy moderation, and there's no consistency to it.

I guess it also, or at least should, depend on what you add to the post.
If it adds something to the topic I'd let it go for sure, the usual "Did you get this fixed" or just being snarky at what someone posted 3 years ago on the other hand pretty useless.

Though the mods taking that into account might just be wishful thinking :P

Dear forum users:
Necro posting has (for the last 29.5 years), and always will be bad forum etiquette. Searching is the key, but it also does not require a useless post because you think your words are so important that the entire Internet must absolutely see them. In the past 30 years, never once (that's right, ever!) have I felt the need to necro post anything after searching for information.

In the vast majority of cases (like 99.9999% by my reckoning) that I have seen in the last 30 years as Forum Warrior, Moderator, and Host, there was absolutely zero need for the necro post to be made, and it offered absolutely nothing to the topic, making it a completely useless post.

In these days of ever changing technology and updates, information quickly grows outdated, therefore, necroposting will only create confusion when someone is looking at this outdated information because a person was narcissistic enough to believe they had something of value to add. If that is true, then simply create a new topic with said information, and if you really want, link back to the thread containing the old, outdated information.

As a quick reference guide:
A current and active thread is one that is continuing to receive replies with the last reply no more than a few days old. It's OK to post here!

A current, but inactive thread is one that received replies within the last couple of weeks, but NOT longer than one month. It's still OK to post here!

A current, but dead thread is one that hasn't received a reply in one to three months. It may be OK to post here, if there is actual relevant information relating directly to the topic. Relevant DOES NOT include things like the following: +1, I agree, It happened to me too, or 3 months and still not implemented, etc.

An old, dead thread is one that has not received a reply in over three months. It is never OK, nor necessary to resurrect this thread, no matter how self important you think your information is. Simply create a new thread.

You are welcome.

Sincerely,
The courteous and thoughtful Internet Using Community.

I've also had people comment "this fix didn't work for me" on an over 5 year old thread on a driver related bug.

Like your GPU architecture wasn't even conceived of when the game reached end of support, no ♥♥♥♥ a workaround for a completely unrelated GPU won't work.

People are suggesting that posters read one of the dozen or so threads that are still on the front page of the forum about the topic where the question has been answered already, not suggesting that the poster reply to those threads.

Sure, that's one possible scenario but not the only one.

There is no time span associated with a necro. It is all about relevancy to the thread subject. You could have a patch getting out for a game a week after the last post and it would not match the reality of the game any more and would just get locked if someone bother reporting it.
