From what I remember, and was able to piece together from the story, the ferals have reverted to a more primitive mindset because of some mysterious disease spreading throughout the region.

Our character has been tasked with hunting the ferals, in the hopes of either finding or administering a cure for their condition, rehabilitating them back to a more civilized state.
