Modding support
We'd like to support modding in the future. We're working on a modding SDK so that players can build their own ships, stations, weapons...

At the moment, assets from the game are not included, so you will not be able to run the game itself, only the editor. We realize that this is not very useful yet, but you can already grab sources for the game on GitHub[github.com] to see what the game looks like. You will need Unreal Engine 4 to build the sources - take a look at the Modding guide on the wiki, linked below.

This is an ongoing effort that requires work, and should be finalized during the Early Access process if it ends up being possible - we're still not sure what to expect on that front. We will keep you updated here. Feel free to ask any question about modding support here !

Current status : investigating what needs to be done.

I think allowing modding especially steam workshop is a big sales feature. There is just a huge community who buy games just to mod them. This will surely attract more customers and add to longevity to the game. The one thing I wish valve would do is have a section on the store that highlights popular mods. This brings even more positive exposure for devs who offer it. Devs should be handsomely rewarded for extra features like mod friendly tools and scenario editors.

Out of curiosity, do you have any early thoughts as to what the eventual plan is regarding quests and modding?

Skimming through the Pendulum and Tutorial quest .cpp file it's easy enough to understand for anyone with C++ experience, but I'm wondering if somewhere in the backlog there is a plan to move quest scripts towards something that doesn't require compilation. Lua, or XML or JSON maybe?

We have/had support for quest modding through regular Unreal assets, before we moved them to C++, so it's supposedly something we will support.
