Prerelease on "testing" branch: upcoming fixes
Hi everyone,

we will be pushing new builds to a special branch "testing" first in the hopes that a few more people will try them out before we push them on everyone. You can opt into "testing" at any time: right-click on the game, go to "Properties" -> "Betas" and select "testing".

Right now, the test branch contains the following unpublished fixes:

  • The testing branch is currently on par with the default branch

My issue is still there. Starting the mod with the steamVR beta "oculus_win7and8" makes it crash shortly after i open it

try to launch game by start hl2vr.exe, still wont launch without any error or smth. game just crash after 1 sec after start

Are you perhaps using a steamVR beta?

I tried with different versions, with actual 1.23.7, with different betas, with a hotfix. Game just wont start

I'm afraid that branch is probably too old and not compatible with the version of SteamVR our mod is built against.

Have you updated your graphics card drivers? What system and headset are you running?

I have AMD Radeon 5700 with latest GPU Driver ver.22.8.2, Ryzen 3600x, 16gb DDR4, Oculus Quest 2.
I also have a Virtual Desktop and fpsvr installed, but disabling them did not help in any way.
I have already written you a bug report about this problem and even sent dumps to the mail. I tried all the ways that the guys with the same problem suggested, but nothing helped.

The following additional fixes are now available in the testing branch:
  • The trigger area for activating the flashlight near your head has been slightly increased. If you still have trouble, try holding your hands in front of your head and press trigger.
  • The trigger area for releasing the pistol slide has been slightly increased. Note: the release mechanic will be reworked in a future update.
  • The "quick reload" mode has been reworked and should work more reliably now, especially when seated or crouching. To reload a weapon in quick reload mode, eject the magazine, then lower the gun to your hips while angling it a bit towards the ground.
  • Pistol recoil has been reduced.
  • Horizontal recoil has been removed from the revolver.
  • When reloading the revolver, you will no longer lose ammo; any remaining rounds will be given back to you.
  • Grenade ammo crates will now properly activate the grenade weapon for you. Previously, you had to pick up at least one loose grenade to actually be able to select the weapon.
  • A certain achievement that was not previously doable with Oculus controllers is now possible to complete.

Investigation of the launch issues is still ongoing. Please refer to our known issues[halflife2vr.com] for a list of potential fixes that have at least helped some of the affected players.

Odd, I have the non beta build and I could play it fine, even able to add the "better left handed mod" too.

If I opt into this, will I have the better graphics, I thought I read something the other day but can't find it. maybe confused things.

A new build is available for testing. Included changes:

  • Slightly expanded the area from which you can grab new ammo over your shoulders.
  • Slightly tweaked the trigger conditions for quick reload so that the reload should trigger more easily and consistently.
  • Potential fix for the Zombie Chopper and Manhack achievements not working as intended.
  • Immersive ladder climbing: disabled movement and jump input from the sticks as they were causing people to fall. To clarify: when you are at the height of your intended dismount location, simply let go, and the game should teleport you safely. (In stick-based climbing, you can press trigger on ladders to mount and dismount similarly, if you are having issues.)
  • Stop missiles from exploding with items held in the off-hand; this could lead to premature explosions if the player grabbed a replacement rocket early.
  • Implemented Alyx-style quick weapon swap: if you quickly press the weapon selection button, it will alternate between the empty hand and your previously selected weapon.
  • Prevent weapons from continuing to fire if the menu was brought up while the trigger was pressed, and then the trigger was released before closing the menu.
  • Unequip any weapons held in the off hand if the dominant hand setting is changed.
  • New reload sound effects for pistol, revolver, shotgun and RPG.
  • Tweaked the sights of the revolver to be a little more accurate (WIP).
  • Gordon's bare hands are now properly cut off at the wrists.
