BH2 Spotify and Open Mic Demo
Hi all,

Here's a Beat Hazard 2 Dev Blog Demo on how 'Open Mic' works and how you can use Spotify, Apple Music etc in Beat Hazard 2.

And me messing about with the microphone mode!

It looks amazing! I was kind of afraid there'd be no track detection/leaderboard support for streamed songs. Great job.

this works amazingly well, tested via youtube and spotify though visualisers didnt change much throughout the genres of music i tried. but please keep at it loving what im seeing so far!

I can't believe what I just watched! This is such a damn creative way to gain access to other audio sources! I thought you'd end up getting api access to Prime, Spotify etc (if that's a thing).

(Newbie coder btw)
Is this all raw windows tech? like using Windows Core Audio APIs or something? Or have you gone for a 3rd Party library for handling Audio?

With WASAPI (VIsta and later) every output can be used as input via "loopback" mode

Yes, as KorDen says, it's an API built into Windows. It's amazing. A lot of recording / streaming app use it.
The Track ID system is 3rd party though.

It works pretty well, though it does have a bit of trouble with detecting Tracks. IT cut out early for a couple tracks.

So if I set it to line in and try to change devices it freezes. Doesn't matter much to me since default is what I needed, but it isn't identifying any tracks for me so far.

What's the likelyhood of the Spotify API being implemented in game? I feel like tabbing out to search/play/restart a song in an external player every time, coupled with less than perfect song detection is going to become frustrating fast.

There is no Spotify api that allows streaming and access to the music pcm data. So with the best will in the world, it just can’t be done.

The most they allow dev to do is access a users music preferences and control the web player.

But it is possible to retrieve a users spotify library though the API and start/stop/restart playback on an existing player? So theoretically you could retrieve the audio through your openmic feature but control playback in game which removes the need for tabbing out and also removes the need for a music discovery service as you'd know exactly what track was playing already?

Even if I have to have the Spotify app/web player open in the background, to me that's preferable to having an awkward process to play the next track that I'm going to have to repeat every few minutes (or more often if I'm trying to get a high score on a track and need to frequently restart) and then potentially not have the track recognised correctly.

Sorry to be a demanding arse ;) But I remember the addition of the restart function in BH1 being a god send and feel like having to tab out to play a track is going to be as annoying as not being able to restart the track in BH1 was for me.

Sure, this would be an awesome feature. I’d need to double check that it would really work this way.

But my main point was that a proper in game Spotify api is not available.

But yes, I’d love to add this in the future.

Also, don’t forget, we’re still in early access and the game is far from complete. Give it time!

It just so seem that browsers/applications don't seem to have hooked up PUMA[docs.microsoft.com] (or if they did, microsoft has something broken.. it shouldn't[docs.microsoft.com] be possible)

.. anyway, just for the records embedding in the OP seems broken.

Congrats dude, the system is completaly awesome, I sincerely though that would be a very bug without scores or some kind of track, but is almost perfect.
Just saw a little things to say: SOMETIMES looks like the lights don't sync the music, but considering its a beta and the "To do List" on Trello, everything will be adjusted
Beat Hazard 2 surprised me as the first game did.
