I did one recently where I used only 3 vehicles that I upgraded throughout the playthrough. I used and upgraded:

1. A fighter, uses only guns, no explosives so it can only dogfight or damage enemies with the red HP bars and was fast and agile.

2. An attacker, uses bombs and Rockets to destroy ground targets as well as the targets with the blue HP bars and was slow but tanky.

3. A transport vehicle, no weapons, just Chirpo Passenger Seats to haul Chirpos around.

I started the challenge after the first area with only the transport and the fighter. I started using and upgrading the bomber after I unlocked the Bomb Bay.

this is basicly just how i played pioneers lol

Another run I did, after I finished the starting area, I went to Maze Valley and worked my way backwards. Made it easier since it gave me access to the Large Cannon early on. I also picked up the Small Modular Wing from the Ruins, the Hover Pad, and the Dynamite from Satellite Desert before heading towards Maze Valley so I would have a way to destroy the Pirate Flak Cannons before getting the large Cannon, and a fast source of propulsion via the UFO Engine glitch for a fast dogfighter.
