I'll get to items eventually. :)
Now that the game has started to sell a bit more you should update the gameplan thread and list some of the things you plan on adding in the future. I see many people asking for the same things and some of them are things you probably are all ready planing on (like items). This would also help us give better feedback since we can suggest things that work with the stuff you are going to add in the game. For example if we know you want to add items we can suggets what type of items would be cool or other mechanics that would work with items.
Keep the main idea minimalistic and clean, that's exactly what's appealing about this. It's not filled with bloat.
However, expanding on this original idea is a go!
I think it just fine, because the game is driven so much by user content. If it turns out a lot of people don't like a certain item then we won't see it in most levels. At this point it's hard to say what is the right direction for the game since it feels like so many things would work. I think one good way for the dev to go forward would be to just add more options and let the users figure out what works and what doesn't. I think having the level editor from the very first version was a really smart move. Even in this early stage with very limited blocks I've seen people used those blocks in really creative ways.
Could even work in teams of 3 too and having to race to the end/help each other up but also avoid enemy fire.
The other thing was traps like you get in the comic book "Spy vs Spy" :) that can be laid down as you go but that's probably not as fun as the simple "rec room" style pop gun!
