My suggestion would be to run CHKDISK on the drive. It's not a steam or UE file size issue. My updates take about 10 minutes, and I'm updating the same files you are. I've never had a read error, but I did get a write error once, way back when, and a check & repair on the disk solved it. I've never had an update take hours.
Yes, the creation date is indicated, and the date of the last post is visible to everyone. The reason why outdated topics are closed is simply because it can lead to outdated information, but also because it's listed as such in the Steam Terms of Service.
For technical issues, it's always better to open a separate topic for the specific problem so we can provide targeted support.
OP didn't post any system specs, SSD or HDD?
