What does that mean? I'm thinking I was told last year I had to get a minimum of empty searches to trigger the jump scare? I'm still trying to figure out what triggers the jump scare. Seems like the developers could at least explain that.
The jump scare is triggered after a certain number (I'm not sure exactly what that number is) of empty searches. The next empty search will trigger the ghost.
EDIT: Here's a dev in the thread from last year...
That second part factors too. I don't know if that's what is happening on the server you're on, but it might explain not seeing them. On officials and SP (vanilla settings) I see one consistently about every 2 or so POI's. I concentrate on larger POI's, however. I rarely search the smaller ones unless I'm looking for something specific.
Perhaps they could make the number of searches required a server setting. You might throw the idea into the suggestions sub. That would let each private server set it to their liking without affecting others.
Thanks for the reply. That looks like the reply I got last year or close to it. I wish the devs could be more specific on what triggers the jump scare. I've been getting quite a bit of empty searches and so far nothing yet. I've asked the owner of the server to check the settings. I haven't heard anything back yet. If It was a default setting I doubt that he changed it. I included that setting with another setting I found that he could check.
The Halloween ghost is just a reskin of the Christmas Santa ghost. It uses the same empty box mechanic.
As far as I know you don't get a gift at Halloween.
I don't know why they have to use the empty box mechanic. It penalizes people on higher loot servers. The search I did showed that 70% - 80% of the players are on high loot servers.
Seems like the developers could have used a different metric. People like you get a lot and people like me don't get any. Maybe I'll try looting more. I don't even like vanilla loot though.
No, it's turned off (or set to 0), but the mechanic is still the same. I doubt it's a big priority to make a new mechanic just for Halloween, or alter the existing one in a way that will also change the Christmas one and thus throw off the balance they want on vanilla servers.
For the effect they want with the Christmas gift theme that won't over-indulge the loot rate on vanilla. It's not penalizing anyone, as you 'chose' to be on a high loot server. Those on a low loot server who think it happens too much have done the same. To quote my mother, who said this to me occasionally (only occasionally, I swear XD ), "You did this to yourself."
To pull a quote from last years discussion...
...the opposite is also true. A setting for the number of empty boxes needed seems simple enough (devs call, though). You might suggest it. It took some time, but that's how we got a setting to turn the ghosts off entirely.
If it's turned off (set to 0) even though the mechanic is still there how is what I said not true? The results are still the same. No gift.
I'd say the argument could be made it penalizes and rewards both groups. I would think some people like the jump scares so they like having more. I've seen people that don't like them and think there's too many. I'd say some people that don't like them are fine not getting them on a higher loot server. I'd say some people that want them don't get them on a higher loot server. Seems like they could use a different metric that would be fair to everyone separate from how a person prefers their loot setting.
That is true both ways. As I explained it could also go both ways to whether it penalizes or rewards both groups. Devs call is exactly what it is. That's why people make suggestions and voice their concerns. Will it get anything changed? I have got things changed before. Scum isn't the only EA game I've played that listens to the players.
They could, but then it wouldn't work for the game setting (vanilla) and presumed purpose they originally made the mechanic the halloween ghost is based on for.
I'm not suggesting they don't make an accommodation for cases like yours. I just think your solution, changing the metric used, is the wrong way to go and unnecessary. A setting for the number of empty boxes would be better.
We're just rehashing the thread form last year, though, so I'll leave it there.
How do you know it wouldn't work for vanilla when you don't even know what they would change to? Currently it works really good for vanilla and lower. It doesn't work very good at all for higher loot settings.
Just because it's from last year doesn't mean it's not an issue today also.
