Keyboard Support
Hi, is it possible to play this game with a keyboard? Specifically, wearing a Vive headset and using WASD keys to move around (or even just W)? I wouldn't actually be pressing the physical keys, the keyboard output would be emulated by my Virtuix Omni. Thank you.

Hi SutekiB! Are you talking about default roomscale exploration, or the movement which is currently executed by teleportation? Also exploration is only a part of aplication, since it has educational purposes, we found that sometimes 360 panoramas and videos are more suitable way to introduce some parts of this history, so I'm not really sure if playing on Virtuix Omni will be a comfortable experience for you. Still if you think so let us know, the app is still in development (we don't have early acces on our maine page due to some terrible mistake), and we consider all feedback valuable, and we already had a little talk about keyboard input after your post.

Hi Burza, thank you for your response. I mean traditional locomotion as would be executed typically with a keyboard or gamepad. I thought I saw someone playing a section of the game that way in this video: https://youtu.be/b480PXHausw?t=9m52s

I understand that exploration is only part of the experience but that's okay. I ask about Keyboard support specifically, because this is how the Omni works with games that do not use its SDK.

SutekiB, version of the game featured in the video is a branch we prepared for the oculus store, and since then we've totally rebuilt our movement system for vive excluding some basic components needed for this kind of movement in order to optimize it for the vive controllers. However I'll keep you updated, maybe will find a way to implement alternative movement inputs, after we'll deal with bugs and features we're currently fighting/implementing :) Currently we're mostly focusing on improving overall visuals.

I understand. Yes, please let me know if you are able to reintroduce WASD - I hope it won't be too difficult. When you have time, perhaps you'd like to consider supporting the Omni's SDK for more features - like decoupled head and body direction, and analogue speed. A few developers are already working with it, and I believe it will be made publically available soon from here: http://www.virtuix.com/resource-center/ Thank you!

Ok, we already have a plan to introduce sitting mode which will introduce the controls from the Oculus version. Somewhere next month it will be commited for the steam version. I'll keep you notified when we'll upload it.

Virtuix Omni only allow keyboard emulation? Bwahaha, kinda sad. Wasn't a big fan of it as it would make tons of stuff to be able to avoid naturally by crouching and stuff like that, but was still interested in.


Too bad many games won't even support it natively.

But for Chernobyl VR? I don't see major point, the game have barely any VR motion. Other than the keyboard to "warp" or "load" other levels, I don't see much really need.

Hey SutekiB, keyboard support should work now if you switch your steam vr to sitting mode and disconnect your controllers. 'W' will move you forward 'A' will perform an action.

Hi Burza, sorry for the delayed feedback. I was able to use the Omni and thought it worked extremely well. I Velcro'd the Xbox 360 gamepad to the harness since it isn't used much in the game, and that left it handy for when I needed to use the A button to select a new area. Thank you again for going to the effort - it is a powerful and thought-provoking experience. I have left a positive review, and also made a quick video!

Have they updated the game as in your vid it seems a much better quality than what I was seeing, or maybe real rendered stuff shows mbetter than in the headset?

They did say they were working on the visuals, so maybe. The video I captured was from a desktop window and subsequently enlarged, so it would have looked better if I'd got it to display fullscreen. Visuals do tend to suffer when viewed through an HMD, but I couldn't quantify how much.
