No shame whatsoever in stopping at this point, the last challenge does require the numbers (and the annoyance that comes with it) to make up for it.
I'll say, though, that it might not be quite as bad as you're thinking. I believe a max leveled character (no stored levels) and 2~3 perfected items (possibly with some cheese on top) might be enough to beat even the toughest of the challenges in this game.
For starters, congrats!
Older NIS titles however only seem daunting at first, but most of the time only one character will do. Anything else would be overkill. A little bit of research goes a long way. Even the extra content this version has added can be done with a single character. In my case? I had one super OP character and a lot of minor characters for buffs/debuffs. That's all.
