The secret switchers are yellow. And they SIGNIFICANTLY alter the way you play the level! The one on "the tip of my tongue" eluded me as well, Because youd think it was the kangaroo right? But it is indeed further into the level :) Pay attention to the background is all i'm going to say ;)
For me I felt that finding the secret switchers was something for me to go back to do near end game after getting all the characters. At least that's what I did personally. You can get pretty far into the game by doing the other objectives per level. I'd say probably getting as far as the end of world 4 maybe and by then you'll have most the characters to go back and get most of the secret switches.
