Am I meant to be uneasy right away?
Their other games have had elements of darker themes but it's never been front loaded and usually still has the whimsy. But from the moment Stray Children starts there's this...wrong feeling. I didn't think of this until later, but unlike in so many other RPGs that begin with you're character waking up in bed—no one is calling for you. There's no cute morning jingle. You wake up, in the dark, with no music, alone.

Then the drawing, the missing dad, the note on the table promising a microwaved meal that isn't there...The dogs barking from somewhere, distressed, and as far as I can tell we are playing as some sort of dog character...

And then of course the guy who comes into your house and pretty much forces you to come with him—I was on edge the entire time.

Entering the game world was almost a relief, I haven't seen much of it yet and it's definitely messed up and decaying but, I don't know, its somehow more inviting than that entire real world intro.

Is this tone throughout the whole game? Did anyone else get such strong and strange vibes from the opening thirty minutes or so?

Not saying any of this is a bad thing, it's really cool, just I was so not expecting it.

It is. I'd say it is quite darker than Chulip or Moon. I don't like the gameplay and many of the design choices, but I'm not afraid of throwing a bone when it comes to the atmosphere, writing and art/soundtrack. They've nailed it. Just you wait until you're through the game world.
I'm in the same boat....I DESPISE the gameplay and linearity, but the level design and sinister vibes are so compelling
I've pretty much accepted that I don't like any of the gameplay of these games that much (except Dandy Dungeon) and just everything else around it is what draws me to them. But I'm glad to know I wasn't just in a bad head space or something when I started Stray Children, the level of uncomfortable I got from honestly very little happening made me question if I was just misinterpreting something 😅

Really excited to play more! Trying to go through it slowly and while having other games I'm playing on the side. From what I understand this game might be their swan song? Or at least for the current Onion Games era.
