How do I start my game with an event?

i've tried experimenting but the most i've done is make it so i have to walk into the next tile to trigger the event, but what i want is to have the game start with the movement into the area and my character saying a single thing before we take control.

Look at the event screen below there is the option "Trigger", set this to "Autorun"

i did that, but it kept repeating the event

Well, yeah. It's an Autorun event. They do keep on running if you don't turn them off once finshed. That's what they are there for.

thats what i'm trying to figure out, how do i turn them off

if i use 'Erase Event' it will just reappear if i hit that spot again. unless i can figure out how to stop and autorun and erase the event permananty i may have to copy and paste the entire map and use that one after wards

You can designate a self-switch It will only appear once then. (So set up a second event page and then the condition to "Self-Switch A")

The same way you change any event, have it switch to a second page. If you don't know how then you really really need to sit down with any tutorial about event basics.

thankyou, i wasn't sure how to use switches until now. I didn't know their use and any guides i read made no sense until now.

I would check out this beginner's guide for RPG Maker VX Ace. Yes, it's for Ace but most of it is still relevant to RPG Maker MV and it walks you through creating a complete game, including basic eventing, doors, cutscene type stuff like you're trying to do and more. It's a great basis for starting out.
