How to get Copy Kitty running on the Steam Deck!
Copy Kitty doesn't work out of the box on the Steam Deck... you can launch the game just fine, but as soon as you get to the level select menu in Story Mode, the game will crash.

I was able to use protontricks[github.com] to get it working on my Steam Deck though! Here's a guide to how to do it.

  1. Install Copy Kitty onto your Steam Deck
  2. On its page, click the gear button > Properties > Compatiblity. Check 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool'. Then select Proton 7.0-2.
  3. Switch the Steam Deck into desktop mode
  4. Install protontricks[github.com]. If you have Copy Kitty installed on the internal storage, you can simply do this with these commands in the terminal:
    flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
    echo "alias protontricks='flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks'" >> ~/.bashrc
You'll need to open a new terminal for the protontricks alias created by the second command to work.
I think that if you've installed Copy Kitty on a SD card, you might need to also grant protontricks access to that location[github.com], though I haven't had to do that myself.
  5. Run the following command, the complete the installation windows as they appear:
    protontricks 349250 dotnet452 xna40
For some reason, simply installing xna40 always caused the .NET installation to fail. However, if you install dotnet452 first, and then select to repair the .NET installation when installing xna40, it works just fine.
  6. That should be it! Go back to gaming mode and try it out. Note that you may need to bind or use a mouse if you'd like the change the in-game controller bindings.

This is an list of what I did with tinkering to get it to work... but I also tried other stuff along the way, so it's possible something else I did made this work. Let me know if this works for you if you try it!

Doesn't work for me, unfortunately. .net framework 4 just fails to install every time. Also tried installing just it first but to no avail

Edit: Finally got it working! A user by the name Marlyn described (in the sticky thread) a workaround that I find works. Just change your proton version to 7.0 and delete or move all thumbnails (the files that end in .thumb) in /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Copy Kitty/Content/levels/

Alternatively, you can check "Properties..." and in "Beta" section select "steamdeck - Steam Deck compatibility testing branch".

it has been updated to work on the deck but it wont load for me any ideas. It just loads for a second and kicks me back to the game page.

Runs out the box now on deck for me, though the resolution doesn't have a perfect match for the deck screen, to my eyes choosing windowed 1200x900 is giving the best results

If my memory is correct it runs in 4:3 aspect ratio like some other games, like Momodora. If you absolutely want it to be 16:10 I think you can force stretch it in the game properties

thanks, did wonder about the odd looking resolutions, won't force stretch as it looks fine and that stretching thing never appealing to my eyes. crazy game.

Yeah thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio games like Copy Kitty and Momodora as well as emulated 4:3 content look better on the Steam Deck than they would on a 16:9 display. It's sort of a sweet spot that can do 4:3 and 16:9 pretty well.
