Apparently it's caused by 'outdated video codecs on newer Windows systems (8 and later) that are incompatible with the game's original video files'.
If you want to fix it (though there's not much point, you can beat this game in like 4 and a half hours) you'll have to download an updated version of the file online then replace it in your game's file directory.
A quick google search will bring up a tutorial on how to do this, and where to get said update files from.

There's a thread about this somewhere. Some people say it works, but for me the sound cuts out during the intro, but it fixes the other issues. After loading the menu, the sound returns and everything is fine.
