Imo the combat is better then in el1 because there is no weird semi control scheme but also I'm glad its not as in depth as aow4, so combat doesnt take forever.
Of course playing manually to abuse terrain, and not just rush in with your units will spare you more losses, perhaps turn a defeat into victory, but playing with nothing but autoresolve still means you'll be playing by the same rules AI plays, so you're not at a disadvantage.
You're not missing anything if you auto resolve everything.
Saying that, if you didn't like EL1 and don't like AoW what kind of combat are you even looking for? RTS? Autobattler?
If you 'manual combat' you can still set it to 'auto' and literally watch the AI play the battle, if that's what you're after, but if that's the case why not just autoresolve from the beginning?
I'm so confused as to what you're after, though. What's a game you think does combat well for your taste for comparison?
For my part, IMHO AoW4 has hands down the best turn based combat in a 4X of all time.
Ever.
Doomstacking is the norm for a reason.
I tried this game on game pass and uninstalled after a few hours.
If, AI would play totally idiotic, then it's probably not good to have manual battle against AI.
Against humans it would be always fun as its brain VS brain.
The mix of strategical elements and tactical elements is - IMO - what makes a good game even better.
