Newest update wiped my save file
With humankind updates I could still play my old save files. But this morning the game auto updated and got rid of my save file. Also completely seemed to forget I had played the game before.

Was this game reset intented with the patch or an error during the update process?

Cloud synchronization software (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) could lock the folder the game was using to store temporary files (including saves) which prevented some players from launching the game. We have changed where we store temporary files

from > C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Endless Legend 2

to > C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Amplitude Studios\Endless Legend 2

The game will copy the contents of the previous folder to the new folder. If you encounter any issue with your saves after launching the game, please verify this copy has been done properly.

I misunderstood that your save file wasn't corrupted, but just didn't exist. Its possible the move of the save file didn't happen. Your symptoms sound more like the file copy from the old save location, to the new one didn't work.

Please check if your save files were moved correctly, or if maybe OneDrive or other My Document syncing programs maybe moved/removed/etc your saves. You might have to move this manually. This is a one time thing, as going forward the save location will be the one listed above.

Note sort of depending on the types of updates that happen previous save files may not be compatible with updates.

Smaller hotfixes may not have that much impact on your existing saves.

This update is pretty significant and as such it may be incompatible with your existing saves.

You can use the "rollback" beta which will roll you back to the previous update if you want to use a previous save

Note that when these kinds of updates happen though, its encouraged to use a new save, as issues you might experience could be related to incompatible save information.

A single developer, as in Manor Lords or Stellar Tactics, can preserve game saves during major updates. But an entire studio cannot/will not do so?
My save files are no longer functioning either.
Then there's no point in playing it until it's released in about two years' time. Because that just leads to frustration.

I mean, for one you can turn off auto update
second save compatibly is almost entirely dependent on what is getting touched and by how much,
third right now games don't take that long to play through (I tend to play all my games in one sitting) so most people aren't getting caught in the middle of a long running game to be worth the extra time to try and catch it all where as the listed games are made to be long time investments worth trying to keep safe
Four earlier access isn't going to be 2 years but even after it's out there will be patches and dlc like every game and some of those will break saves

It shouldn't wipe out any save. But it might take a bit of extra time.
Could you check the previous and the new locations provided in the above answer from Satoru?

How? It is showing beta participation as none. How can I get access to the rollback beta?

This is what happened. The save files still exist and once moved do work.
