I almost never found any actual reason to use diplomacy. The AI was very passive, rarely expanded, never seemed interested in making a grand attack on any of my territories, only occasionally throwing very small groups of units, which were very easy to kill.

I don't ever recall a moment where I thought "oh, they're forming a major alliance? I better get in on it or ally with their enemies" like I felt in Endless space.
