I think they need to find a way to spawn more runners personally. Thats 90% of the threat imo. Armored and shield zombies aren't really a threat when you can gimp them with any bladed weapon or a good old kneecap shot.
Runners break the loop by requiring teamwork and coordinated efforts to bring them down quickly. They increase the likelyhood of death and challenge by shifting the players focus allowing the slower shamblers to move in.
Currently you can pretty much shoot zombies willy nilly because of the ammo count and weapon stocks. It removes the entire challenge of becoming affected or even risking damage in melee.
You´ve found one of the biggest problems here but you gotta be carefull about how you would fix it. The NMRIH franchies is build on these slow moving zombies. Increasing runners would balance firearm usage but make meele even more useless and risky then it already is.
The only way to fix this issue would be to reduce ammospawn even more and nerf all traits that have something to do with ammunition. Practicly forcing responders to use meele for most interactions.
If we increase zombiespeed and focus more on gunplay, the game would just evolve into a version of Left 4 Dead without special infected, coop features, modsupport and polish.
And as we have seen with turtlerocks attempt, no game (let alone a EA title with such little polish) can beat l4d2 at their own game.
Nightmare and game balance is something at this point should just be held off until the missing content gets added in. First game’s nightmare was a whole different league to point out from but how the apparent sequel works in terms of combat and rules is trivial compared to it.
(I know not the right discussion... sry). But maybe a solomode would realy be a good idea at this point.
