You invest your production points to each of those branch and after end of each month you can get some research progress - the amount is random. When a specific level is reached you can build better units (land and air), or the performance is upgraded (naval). You can always purchase the obsolete units.
There is additional branch which is nuclear technology. There is only one level to reach. After succeeding, you receive Nuclear bomb every few months.
