Optimal Builds?
I saw a guide that looked well thought out, but it's 2016 guide so idk if it's still accurate after all the changes.

Wanted to know if people have optimal builds for this game? Especially for my main Watabax? would appreciate pics of the grid so I know where to exactly put each upgrade.

I don't think there are optimal builds, though some builds are better than others. Watabax is influenced by hoverheat which depends on energy, so you probably want to prioritize grind as one of your two primary stats. But the rest depends on what you actually want to do with the character. I would probably go the trick route with him, but you could also build him for speed or something. Or maybe even gameball if you wanted to.

The exact placement of upgrades does not matter save for the five special slots for each character (1 unique, 2 linked, 2 linked). The linked slots should generally have your two primary stats, and the single slot should go to your secondary stat. The rest should be filled as needed, including any tetriary stats. I would leave out hacking and strength completely unless you have either a gameball or a hacking dedicated character. The main thing to increase is jump + grind + speed in whatever combination you want.

I would recommend gathering upgrades and experimenting with multiple setups in a second squad until you find a combination you like.

necro post but probably don't leave out hacking and strength, hacking also increases hoverheat time, and strength increases throw strength, which are useful for any character not just gameballers
edit: strength also diminishes slowdown when carrying a ball, but that's slightly less useful for speed types since they're so fast already

Don't sleep on jump/bounce aswell as it allows you to jump over a lot of obstacles which would normally require you to slowly climb over it. Also, if you have a high bounce stat, you can do horizontal bounces a lot better, which can be hard to time but it allows you to build up speed and charge forwards.
also worth noting, with high enough slide, you can infinitely gain speed upto a max of 50, or unlimited if you're already above that limit, via boosters or otherwise. simply slide, but always be turning and you'll gain speed

I didn’t know that about hack, is it actually worth the slots to spec into hack to keep hoverheat up? Does it make enough of a difference or would the slot be better spent on something like speed / slide / jump

yes it is far more useful to have 1-2 red hack chips (depending on the character) than another s/s/j
it also increases combo time, meaning shorter combos can gain more score and thus more energy quickly
and increases charge speed, essential for characters like Grind-E, with one of the worst energy stats

str only really matters if doing gameball/pickup games, it decreases energy drain on throw/bump, increases throw distance/speed, increases bump force/resist, and reduces slowdown and stat decreases while carrying the ball
bumps specifically will be forced if you're moving in a faster and similar velocity to the target, and resist is if they bump you instead
being bumped is actually tech, because you can exploit it to have players run into you and transfer their speed in a race, but that's it's only application

spd/sld/jmp are movement cards so they apply to all missions, but i will note that slide will usually be more effective than speed but with lower accel and handling
