BLACK SCREEN on FaceRig (Input or Output)
This thread is meant for those seeing a BLACK SCREEN/FEED instead of the FaceRig cam feed either on Input or on Output.

If you are experiencing a Black Screen on the Physical Camera Input feed (or lack of an input feed), even though you have selected your physical webcam as input for FaceRig continue reading this post.
If you are experiencing a Black Screen on the Virtual Camera Output feed, skip ahead to the next post in this thread.

Black screen on Input.

If you are seeing a black feed as webcam input (by default in the lower left corner of the FaceRig window) that means that FaceRig is not getting images from the physical web camera. The face tracker cannot work without access to those images so, naturally, the tracking will not work either.

That has three likely causes:

1. Another program is already using your physical webcam.
2. Your physical webcam is not properly initialized (if it has a LED to show when it turns on, that LED remains off when FaceRig starts).
3. Physical webcam's drivers are not up-to-date.


1. Another program is already using your physical webcam.
In Windows, only one program can grab use of a webcam device at a given time. If another program is already using your physical webcam, FaceRig cannot access it.
In this case, simply exit FaceRig, close any other programs or processes that may be using the physical webcam ( you can even reboot for good measure) , and then start FaceRig again.

Note: There are programs such as ManyCam built specifically to overcome this Windows limitation. They spawn multiple DirectShow filters that are are copies of your original webcam, so you may use it simultaneously in multiple apps. If you do chose use such programs please read their documentation carefully (make sure you know what you are doing). Holotech Studios has no relation with the publishers of such programs and does not offer support for them.


2. Your physical webcam is not properly initialized.
The reasons for that can be many, but to correct that simply go to FaceRig Advanced UI->Settings->Devices and explicitly select your physical webcam from the webcam drop down list (even if it appears at first that it is already selected), and pick a resolution and FPS combination supported by it. Do not leave these settings on Default. Apply these settings.

3. Webcam drivers are not up-to-date.
Naturally you may want to check that the webcam drivers are the most up to date ones from its manufacturer, for your OS version.

Black screen on Output

If everything is fine in the FaceRig window , and you use the FaceRig Virtual Webcam to broadcast to a webcam-enabled app ( such as Skype), but all that you see in that app is a BLACK SCREEN, follow these steps:

1) Make sure you have enabled Broadcasting in FaceRig(Top menu button in the Advanced UI - you must toggle the UI to Advanced to access this)

2) Please make sure to go to the Skype options (in Video) and check that you are using the "FaceRig Virtual Camera" (or similar options in other webcam-enabled apps that you use for broadcasting).

3) Make sure that your FaceRig virtual camera version is 1.01.1000 or newer (check this by going to Programs and features in Control panel)

--> If you don't see this virtual device as an option or if you have an older version, please try manually installing the driver as it means that the driver was not properly installed when FaceRig updated (perhaps you said "No" when being prompted for the install). The driver can be located inside your FaceRig\Bin\prerequisites\FaceRigVirtualCamDriver\ folder. ****Please make sure that you install the correct version for your operating system (win7 OR win8). Win8 also works for Windows 10.

4) Additionally, keep in mind that there a limitation on Windows: if another application is grabbing the feed from the FaceRig Virtual Camera device before your desired webcam app ( let's say Skype) then Skype will not be able to access it.

Make sure no other application is using the feed from the virtual device.

You can select the webcam by going to Advanced UI-Advanced tracking config-Trackers- Ulsee-Input device

i have black screen went too setting click on my web cam got black screen sound put no picture running micsroft web camare on windows 10pro have been threw just about every think on here and still will not work

Have you tried to reselect again your webcam?
Also are your webcam drivers up to date?
If you indeed tried reselecting the camera and it still has issue (i.e. black screen without any error thrown), then I suggest going to c:\users\<yourWinUser>\Documents\Holotech\FaceRig\UserCfg\ and delete trackers.usc. This will revert to default all trackers configuration.


|If deleting the .usc file did not work then could you also provide the VP.log so we can find some clues on why exactly does this issue occur?
To get the VP.log go to <steamInstallDir>\steamapps\common\FaceRig\ folder, copy the contens of the VP.log, paste it to pastebin.com and post the link.

i did every step regardless on this topic.
i'm using a Logitech C922 stream webcam and still have the black screen as this is the last step i saw i'm providing you with the VP.log. here : http://pastebin.com/NN8CLHVW

Also i have to mention i can only select my webcam on the options menu when i minimize and maximize the "input and output" tab after that i can choose / select my webcam.

By the looks of the VP.log, there is no camera selected at all. My suggestion is to go to c:\users\<yourWindowsUser>\Documents\Holotech\FaceRig\UserCfg\ and delete the trackers.usc file. This will revert camera input to default and it may select the "AVerMedia HD Capture C985" device. You'll need to go to Advanced UI, Advanced Tracker Configuration dialog, Trackers tab and select your Logitech c922 camera from the ULSee input devices drop down. Make sure the camera isn't already used by other applications.

After doing the above, if the issue still persists, please save the newly created VP.log and post it again. I also suggest creating a new thread for your issue.

Hello, i used Face Rig the last time at eastern. Now i wanted to use it again but it didn`t Launch. When i try to launch i get a Message. "Face Rig Process failed to launch. Error code returned c0000135" This is coming when i`m clicking on "Launch". I reinstalled the complete programm,m got all updates, but the same error...... :steamsad: I miss my Wyvern ... ehm Dragon...

I've found that sometimes just bypassing the launcher is all that's needed to fix black screen output. I think that should be included in the list of things to try.
