You more or less have to go out and 'find' the story yourself. Survive, explore and remember to check your radio frequently and it will all come to you.

Everything you do can trigger events that give you hints and clues on what to do next. when you repair your relay you can receive signals that give you the locations of new ecological biomes that contain new blueprints and resources. exploration is the biggest part of the game. alot of people give up the game when they dont get the game fed to them. you have to put the peices together yourself, explore yourself and you dont get told exactly what to do. you are free to do anything. most of the negative reviews are from people who are oblivious to what happens around them. small hints are still hints.

first of all, repair the radio. it has ALOT of hint in it. secondly, maybe go to the most OBVIUS thing you can see/ think of? and explore, thats how you really progress

I played this game back when there was pretty much nothing to do yet, so maybe I didn't start playing with enough of a clean slate, and didn't expect to find anything new in the areas I visited in the past. I'll try that, thanks.
