What Killed the Degasi? (Spoilers)
This is gonna be long. I've talked about this before, but I've done more research and thought I should re-open the topic. The previous general consensus was that the unnamed leviathan was a Ghost Leviathan. I've reviewed the logs more, and it undoubtedly is a Reaper Leviathan by sound. It confuses me that Paul clearly cannot identify the leviathan. You would think they would have seen at least a Ghost Leviathan due to where they live, and perhaps a Reaper while surviving all that time. So they should have been able to identify it.

I think what currently happened is that Maida captured a Reaper, and a fellow Reaper followed to help. But, I don't think it makes sense that a Reaper would be involved due to the nearest one being in the Aurora Crash Zone. Further we see in the cinematic trailer that Bart made a habitat where the Aurora crashed, meaning either Bart is stupid and set his habitat right in the center of Reaper territory, or the more logical conclusion that Reapers don't naturally live in this area, but rather the Aurora crash attracted them. This means that the nearest source of Reapers at the time was the Dunes which makes it even more unlikely.

The logical story would be Maida captured a Ghost Leviathan juvenile and the Adult Ghost Leviathan heard its calls and came to its rescue, though no audio supports this. If this were the case I would have no problems with it, but the audio is of a Reaper and Paul mentions the Kraken with tentacles. More logical based on Paul's log is that a Sea Dragon heard the captured Ghost Leviathan juvenile while surfacing to hunt, and did his thing. People said this was unlikely, I can go into an argument of why it is not unlikely, but in the interest of shortening this I will remove that section.

I really don't think the current Degasi story makes sense, but would love to hear any input that sheds more light on the topic. I personally think that the leviathan sounds in the logs should be changed to that of the Ghost Leviathan, and Paul mentioning a kraken with tentacles should be removed.

Are you 100% positive that it wasn't a Crab Squid? Those are , i would say, big enough to be considered a Leviathan and they have tentacles. Their cries don't resemble the cries of neither the Reaper nor the ghosts though. And i haven`t heard the log you are reffering to so i don't know what the cries sounded like . I just think it COULD be a Crab Squid simply because i've seen one in a youtube video right beside the "proposed Degasi Habitat".

It wasn't there when i visited the habitat so i guess it's not always there but in "BorekPlays" video of HIS visit to the habitat , he was attacked by the Squid and his Seamoth was destroyed.

when i first saw that log, i thought it was a crabsquid also, and the first time i went to visit that base a crabsquid wrecked my seamoth, it was like patrolling around the base

From the logs it sounded like a reaper screaming. here is some ideas..
-I like your idea on the ghost leviathan because that is the only leviathan in the grand reef
-The log only says leviathan so we cannot use that as helpful evidence
-The screech does sound somewhat like a reaper but why would a reaper travel so far into the deep grand reef
-Paul calls it an alien kraken
-Note Paul says it is bigger then a cyclops (Reapers are not as big as a cyclops)
-He says it has tentacles which only the sea dragon has that (Not including the Sea emperor
-The sound never sounded like a sea dragon or ghost leviathan
-The ghost leviathan is the only leviathan native to the grand reef

-Also a theory is that the mercenary injured a reaper brought it back a sea dragon was hunting and followed the blood trail which would explain why a sea dragon could be there

-My conclusion either the devs might have messed the data log up a bit or this is a leviathan that is not in the game

There had been at least 10 years between the Degasi incident and the players arival on the planet. So the mentioned leviathan could long be dead / extincted, and we will never find any trace of it.
Beside this, storys about gigantic kraken are very common in mythologie. And such animals does, in fact, exist in real-life, too. So it is probably, that the log origins from a time in the developement-process, where a leviathan-sized kraken had been planned for the game, but was dropped later.

I personally think that it was a reaper. It sounded like a reaper on the log and there are enough reapers in the crater to make one of them following the scent of another one feasible. Perhaps they are protective of their mates or offspring. It's true that reapers aren't as massive as a Cyclops, but they're about as long from head to tail and things often appear bigger than they are when they're trying to kill you.

P.S. Paul describes Maida stabbing the creature in the neck with a shard of metal. I dare you to show me where the neck is on a crabsquid XD

P.P.S. I don't think that it's possible to penetrate the hide of a sea dragon without mechanical assistance. (I know people have killed them with the knife but just no :P)

I do like your evidence, I still think it could still be a seadragon even though it has tough skin Maida has already done some impressive things like single-handedly almost killing reapers. and seeing as the degasi survivors new what a reaper was it was intersting how paul had described it as "An alien kraken" rather than a reaper. He also described it as having tentacles, so unless he means the giant claw like thing on the reaper's face, It might not be a reaper

Sea Dragons are stupid creatures, you know that from the logs from the alien research facility... They'll just run smack into whatever metal construct exists to get their baby back (that's the one that did that right?)

Anyway, a Sea Dragon is pretty much the only tentacle beast that's bigger than a cyclops and they're known to attack buildings. Perhaps she killed a baby sea dragon and the 'mom' got angry.

Also, the crabsquids aren't attracted to light, they're attracted to moving things with light. You can put a base on top of the degasi habitat and toss as many flood/spot lights on it as you like and they'll never bother it.

Huh. Yeah, I guess it probably was a Sea Dragon then

Given the logs from Maida posted on the Below Zero wiki that are planned to be in the game, the sounds of the levianthan, and Paul's description, the most likely scenario is this:

1. Maida brings a Reaper back to the base, presumably bleeding out the entire time.
2. A Sea Dragon Levianthan coming up to hunt due to lack of food, smells the blood of the Reaper and follows.
3. Reaper, still alive, roars, thus the sound we hear. (All on the assumption Degasi Logs #8 and #9 happen simultaneously.)
4. Sea Dragon happens upon that location at the time, and to try and get at not only the Reaper, but also the other creatures it can smell inside the structure, rams the Seabase, destroying it.
5. Maida jumps out to attack the Sea Dragon, but the Reaper gets loose, and she stabs it instead.
6. The Reaper and Maida go down and yadda yadda she ends up at Sector Zero.
7. Sea Dragon thoroughly in pain and smelling the Reaper is gone, bails to the ILZ (or possibly as Paul ominously hints in Log #3, the Sea Dragon goes after him).

i assumed since he called it a kraken and the tentacles, he meant sea dragon or emperor, but I never saw a dragon/emperor above 1000 meters so that, to me, is conflicting data. honestly I think the devs wanted it to be ambiguous since the Degasi story is so detached, it helps to add horror and mystery to never really know what it was. what if there is another leviathan breed we havent seen yet? what if the sequal is us claiming the planet as our own and going back to follow up on the ending to "play" with the offspring of our old friend and make sure that everything went according to plan, only to find out it didnt, and now the main character has to build a new base with their minimal crew (similar to Degasi) to not only protect the planet from a new threat, but to establish a colony with the scientists and adventurers we brought with us to that end....and thats when we find out what really took down the Degasi expedition, something so big, it doesnt even live near the volcano, but only shows up once in a while to feed on the ghost leviathan that plague the deep and the crater rim.....and it too, like our old friend (RIP) is intelligent and telepathic, but not nearly as benevolent, which the Degasi never found out because it immediately saw them as a threat and went aggro with no attempt to communicate. upon realizing we are the same human that showed up before and saved the planet from the disease, it decides to communicate with us, and it is not happy to see us. maybe it preffered the disease, needed it, or perhaps it is indifferent and just wants us gone, and we have to pull the whole "if you kill me, more ogf my kind will come looking for me blah blah blah" leading to an "awww shucks, that would be terrible, I guess I wont murder you like I did the Degasi. lucky you were only here long enough the first time that I hadnt come back to feed again. convince me that coexisting wont compromise my current way of life more than I want it to, even though that threshold is indeterminable until it arrives etc etc"
