Screamers use a 2D Heat Map, so changing Vertical Elevation gains you nothing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l6cWadG5iA
It's not about them "hearing you".
It's about your General Heat-Generating Activities (in the Chuck) Attracting Them...
If you want to see "how red", build a 2-3 high post and just attach blocks to it's side.
As you add blocks, use the Integrity Viewer to see the "shades of red" before collapse.
You'll get the most "shades of red" with Concrete (12 Blocks) or Steel (15 Blocks).
There is only one tried and true method to limit screamers.
A world map is made up of small "sections" for the heat map. If you can find the spot on the map where 4 different heat map sections meet, you can build your base with heat generating items in each of the 4 different sections splitting up your heat signature.
There is only one Overhaul that I know of that has a tool that lets you track those boundaries down.
Rebirth.
It has a helmet slot item that tells you your heat level. You can use it to mark the area, and find those boundaries.
*disclaimer: Your presently needed amount of *units of spikes* may vary. Do consider safety.
My only true win against screamers thus far was in my 10k map, made 25 block deep trench around my base, 4 blocks wide..should have been wider, Zs jumped like spiders over..had to build wall which prevents Zs to see me.
So..better make trench and separate base rather than build down

I'd double-check that...
I've never known Screamers to spawn into a Land Claim Protected Area.
It's still possible (maybe if the underground area is huge), but I've not heard about it.
Maybe you have a tiny corner of your Base outside the Protected Area?
Speaking of "interesting mechanics", do you know Zeds can't spawn on Player Blocks?
They only spawn on Terrain Blocks (dirt, gravel, roads, rock, snow, wasteland rubble, etc.).
Meaning:
If you Tile your ENTIRE base floor with Blocks (Plates), they can't spawn inside the base.
Even Horde Night Zombies obey this Rule.
Enjoy.
it's good to see new stuff...I deleted 2 blocks of ladders from my shaft to bedrock..let's see what happens next..only BAD thing is..I have no parkour and need to do athletics to get in..since there is 2 ladders missing :p and already broken my legs 2 times even WITH ladders..I don't prio skills for safe distance..eventually yes but not yet
PS I forgot that..I would need to place ALL blocks as my own..no way jose..I prefer kill Zs then

More than 1 Point makes it hard (or impossible) to jump into 1 Block High Windows.
Step 1: Player figures out a way to be safe inside their base. Such an approach sometimes would take many hours and those players would see that as a reward for being clever and putting in the time. Once the base was secure then they could dream of expanding and making a 'cool' end game base.
Step 2: Fun Pimp would notice that people found a way to make a safe base and then they would change the game so that such a base is no longer possible.
Repeat those steps over and over again with the basic end game from the Fun Pimps to basically be 'never have a cool chill base, always be in a serious threat of losing, and most importantly never have a win loop'
I do not know if they are still doing that but when I became wise to this loop, I stopped playing.
why do I say that here? Because digging underground used to be my go to.

I've never been a Big Fan of Underground Bases (v1.0+).
Too much Prep Work and too Many Extreme Building Techniques are required to be "Safe".
I just re-purpose a Sturdy POI (Boar Barn Fields is my first choice) into a Fortress.
1) Place 11-12 Turrets on all the Major Corners
I can almost ignore them completely with that many overlapping fields of fire.
2) Force their Pathing to a Single Fortified Door
3) Greet 'em with a Desert Vulture to the Face (to Solicitations!)
or Machine Guns from the Roof when I need to get rid of some ammo.
to be clear I have not played since 2020 and I really did not like the alphas post Perk system.
Sp pretty much everything I say regarding base design is out of date.
The point I was making is that everytime players 'won' on design the Pimps desided to nerf it. Basically removing 'win' from the game loop. I do not know if they are still doing that or not but if I had my way I would have just released the game just after the minibike. I might add some town 'reclamation' game mechanics but that is about it.
An alternate solution is to not excavate below a base, mine and design away from it.
True, now that I think about it, I should have made long bedrock level corridor so it's outside POI building and under yard and carve bedrock base there...another notch to my notebook
This way forge heat sig would be AWAY from my building too, so screamers could in fact start dig outside and not try come in..worth to test
