Minor tweak suggestions for immersion
Foreword! <3 I don't mean to be negative or rag on the game, I like what it's doing and what it's going for and I want to use community discussion to aid the development process while it's still got wiggle room.

Firstly, heavy mouse smoothing and a basic low res noise function shifting the players camera, cursor, or both would go a long way in making the camcorder feel believable, as the sharp pixel perfect mouselook takes away from the diegetic effect intended to be cultivated with the camcorder style processing. Camera and cursor can be 'decoupled' to enhance this.

I am an advocate for heavy post processing and effects to serve a game's tone and visual identity, and I think if the VHS camcorder aesthetic is to be kept it needs to be polished with at least these minor tweaks just to round it out, as I'd hate to see it go but also think it doesn't work as well as it could as of right now.

Secondly would be, as a sleight of hand trick with limited resources, keep the microphone wind noise for sprinting well blended and looping constantly at 0 volume, and cranking the volume to fade it in and out based on player movement. A slight bit of wind on looking around with the camera would also help, fading in and out dependent on a minor threshold and based on velocity + how far the cursor is moved. Ideally the wind sound would be a LOT longer.

The reason for this is that as of right now, once you start sprinting it plays the exact same 1 or 2? noises with a lot of 'landmark' features from the beginning every time, very abruptly, that also ends abruptly, and loops very quickly. This shatters the illusion very quickly as you can spam shift and hear the exact same sounds and landmark features play and pop out at your repeatedly from the same starting point, and if this game is supposed to have hours of exploration I think it simply needs to be dealt with. (It also probably won't fare well on youtube)

Additionally, the footprints are very limited and repetitive, and pitch-shifting footprints randomly makes them repeating every 4 steps a lot less noticeable.
Ideally the sound library for this game should be expanded but these tricks help do a lot with what you got.

Third point, a zoom and a flashlight* function would also do wonders, although seemingly much less in your face in importance for presentation than the first two points, zooms and flashlights are valuable fidgets for letting the player do more than simply walk and run! Players will walk a hundred feet without a fidget, and will walk a mile with one.

It also serves as a tool for coaxing the player further into the immersion, a player tends to augment their gameplay with zoom by for example zooming to scout an area they feel unsure of, or simply wish to look at something that is currently out of reach. Similarly, they also tend to use flashlights more importantly than to just to augment basic visibility, crucially by expressing both safety and feeling threatened, with when and how they choose to use their flashlight, perhaps keeping it on to feel safe in an unfamiliar place or if they generally feel it is safe to do so, or potentially turning it off if they feel threatened and wish to minimise their footprint.

* I did eventually find the flashlight but didn't feel like rewriting all of that, but I'll add that giving the flashlight some range might help in giving a bit of agency to it. Additionally, if the camera and cursor are decoupled, do the same for the flashlight and have the flashlight move to the cursor faster than the camera, potentially also a small "free aim" zone around the middle of the screen, see for example games like Insurgency for a popular example. Doing this would allow the player to point the flashlight at something without moving their whole field of vision if the camera lags behind the cursor a lot more than the flashlight. Again, more fidgets and more agency with them and over them means more expression and more engagement/immersion!

it would be nice if the player could hold the camcorder say in left hand and see the vhs effect on the camcorder screen while the player see as a human as well as ya arms holding it while ya walk around n when ya find a flashlight ya hold that in ya right hand while you see the place with human eyes instead of vhs eyes cuz you drop ya camera on the floor at the start but you pick it up it should switch from vhs camera to human eyes then see yourself holding the camera

upload video to youtube=who found the found footage if you say lost the camera while exploring=what extra footage that you didn't see is now on said vhs tape?
do not remove vhs effect from vhs tapes or camcorder screen the only way to see the backrooms clearly is to go there yourself but if you record it ya get a vhs tape to share the found footage if you make it out alive:)

currently i feel like i playing as a vhs go pro hearing human footsteps feels weird

option to toggle player vhs on and off please or add vhs intensity slider as its too intense n makes ya feel ill and that blue stripe down left side of my screen is more than 20 cm wide vs huge 58 inch 4k tv
please remove the blue stripe from the vhs effect then maybe i turn vhs effect back on without worring that huge blue stripe gonna burn into my tv screen

controls as is vs xbox 360 controller are fine=we need a jump key n some diving boards lol
there is a slider for mouse senitivity already= max that out goes to 300 so i set it to 400 in config=perfect it made mouse move properly n if made right stick on controller way better too

i play this with xbox controller in left hand and mouse in right hand
kb too small my hands are massive=keyboards suck so does pressing E simulator
lol if I press w with one finger i press w a and s it drives me nuts the kb keys are too small and i am not fat either=keyboards are way too small where can i buy giant wireless clowns keyboard xd
xbox one controller way too small that's why i have oversized 360 controller
right stick catch 22 vs mouse for accuracy tho so i use both controller and mouse as am both left and right handed

i like this game it be cool to see where it takes us:)


we see found footage of backrooms on yt all the time now its time to play as the human as ya gotta go to the backrooms to record it with ya camera instead of playing as the camera xd

video was before flashlight bug got fixed=played for hours still not found a flashlight

sweet now i can play for hours instead of looking for a bucket to vomit in as 20 20 vision has a cat fight with DOF and the vhs effect=DOF gives you a migraine=eyes don't work that way DOF is like wearing the wrong prescription glasses with Vaseline on the screen n i don't need glasses=I disabled DOF=Awesome now i can't get a splitting headache

option to turn DOF off please

die if ya ignore the sign n ya jump over those railings it says not to jump over
caution shallow pool=do not dive but if you dive into shallow pool from too high up ya hit ya head on the bottom of the pool n float to the surface as ya blood spreads through the water n ya vhs camera floats away=death but what did the camera record that you didn't get to see?

where is the do not run on the pool deck sign=vs wet pool decks?
ya gotta abide the pool safety laws in this map
hope we can ride any slide use it to teleport player around map=attempting to ride purple slide=flat tyre there is no sign that says riding slides is prohibited

i found a yellow ball that turned n smiled at me so i tried to push said ball roll it across the floor n push it say into a pool or down the stairs to see how high it can bounce or to see if it can float as a pool toy just to see if i could make said ball angry and it is small enough to push it into a slide?

to find a trail of blood in this will creep out the atmosphere in this game

valve broke my mailbox years ago i have to manually check everything i write for replies=subbing to discussions following game option does nothing with that so sorry if i ignore replies=will find it to read it eventually:)

do i like this game=very much so yes its cool that everything looks different vs each time ya play:)

will this game get mod/workshop support in future?
one could really have quite a lot of fun porting something like this into Dreamcore

community make custom Dreamcore maps=game gets tons of maps to play or a portal gun but beware of the creepy crawly its a pool cleaner and it's hungry but can only go as far as it's hose will let it go:)

ue 1 2 3 4 and 5 dev kits run nice on my pc and my 8gb rx 580 AMD gpu is considered low end yet i can still push this game to around 100 fps if i override the config=engine and user settings ini files to triple ones fps without nerfing 4k textures
