Same problem for me, I'm stuck on the pole. I tried JoshoB's solution but it didn't redownload any file. And the problem still persists. Any other solution ?

I figured it out. You have to press down before you actually latch onto the pole, or his body resets weird and won't jump to the left

I have had directional problems all through this game after chapter 3. The final straw was the part on climbing of the huge bridge where you have a very short time to make the jump before the platform collapses and you die. I first realized the problem was real bad when Trip asks to be thrown to the next platform and I couldn't perform the task because you have to be in just the right spot to make the throw diagonally to the next platform. This was not a real bad problem as you have plenty of time on this particular platform to find just the right place to make the throw (still frustrating). Then you have to put Trip on your back to make the rest of the jumps. Still not the problem.
The real killer of the game is I could not find the "sweet" spot on the last platform in order to make the jump before time ran out and the plantform collapses in a VERY short time. You have to jump diagonally from left to right and the direction buttons are only up, down, right and left. I could never find the "sweet spot" in time to make the jump and finally gave up on the game. I made the attempt at least 30 times in one night and there were several nights. I've taken the game off of my PC because of this flaw. I spent 7 hours and $20.00 dollars for a huge game failure. Disappoint doesn't describe my frustration over something that should not be in a game of this caliber.

Have you tried pressing the down button just before landing on the pole ?
