Honestly I think anyone is really hard pressed to name similar games to At The Gates.

If I were to make a comparison then Sid Meier's Colonization comes to mind - I almost wonder how cool if a game like At The Gates was made where you play an Aboriginal Faction during the Age of Exploration (though in that game you played as the Colonial powers).

Personally ATG puts me more in mind of Dwarf Fortress than any Civ-like, although it's got a lot of both in its DNA.

Check out Rise of Nations. It's not an indie game, but it's $4.99 and has some of the flavor of ATG. You have to capture resources, setup trade. It models supply/attrition for military units. Kinda fun.

I don't want to come off as not liking ATG, but, I've had some crashes that have put me off of play at the moment and RON has scratched the itch.
