So in short: Agarest Generations of War -> Agarest Zero -> Agarest 2.
I would also like to add that you really should play Agarest and Zero at least halfway thru before touching Agarest 2, as its gameplay is super different from the other 2. It may as well not be included in the series. The plot itself is entirely noncanon to the story, and the only similarities between it and the other games are the gods, weapon types, and skills. Other than that, it's a whole different experience
I play fully trough before I start the next one.
So Agarest & Zero are cannon and 2 is 'sucked out of thumb' story?
Your statement about marriage is correct, it’s a spinoff in its own universe. 0 is a prequel to 1. 2 is its own standalone game also in another universe. You can play the games in any order you please, as story beats don’t connect enough to spoil anything in other games.
As for personal recommendation, I would suggest starting with 1. 0’s combat is refined to be much more punishing than 1’s, 2 has a different combat system that doesn’t translate backwards to 1 and 0, and Marriage has yet another form of combat. I also feel that you can appreciate 0 and 2’s stories more if you have 1’s under your belt.
