It's kinda meh at the moment tbh, but they are looking into improving it.
Ok! thank you for the reply
can't comment on the additional forms, as I only used the (upgraded to level 5) "human" form for combat, haven't bothered with upgrading the other forms until after I beat the 50th floor in the fox ruins (dungeon)
The forms are nice for farming + traversal (swimming up waterfall/swimming diving & of course "flying"). I imagine, they will add more functionality later, but right now, combat is mostly for dungeon progression and mob-material farming. (Thought you can hard cheese the 2 am mob that spawns at night and drops an item you only can get two off each day with your second additional form)
Thank! i'm hesitating between rune factory and this one, but i prefer the DA of Tales of Seikyu, i know it's not the goal of that kind of games to have a detailled combat, but just mashing one button honestly boring me so much, i prefer to play a game without combat at all, than one with combat but not that much option for it.
After beating the main story (as far as it is available) for now, I am mostly busy with farming and getting buddy-buddy with the NPC's and romance options. (nearly 12 h in after achieving the current Mainstory progression) I only visit the ruins for the respawning materials in there and the daily straw doll spawn (short mob fight). It is not a central part of the game for now.
If it is a dealbreaker for you, bookmark the game and see if it will develop in the near future. They added already some stuff. I specifically waited until I could customize the player character (they added it at the september 11th update). Just keep a bookmark/wishlist going and peek in from time to time, if it's in a state that you are willing to play/try out!
Your base Human form has 2 main abilities: Items and an, as far as I can tell, invulnerable dodge roll. The First form gives you AoE attacks and a charge. The Second a ranged attack and water movement. The Third a block and flight. There's a 4th, but I haven't unlocked it yet.
The second form is the most useful over all, as you can use it to kite enemies if you're in/near water, plus it's attacks break every sort of material I've come across so far, be it iron ore/gemstones or Hardwook/Oak.
Levelling up the forms brings 2 main benefits, more/improved abilities and better stats, with each Human boosts base HP, First Form adds a multiplier on attacks in all forms, Second Form increases base AP, Third Form increases base Stamina used for Yokai abilities.
Items can be mixed in during fights easily enough, and buffs from food items carry over and affect your Yokai form's abilities.
The Atk/Def buffs drinking Sake or the Lemon/Melon ninja sodas can easily allow you to steamroll tougher enemies, like the stone golems while still using the starting sword and no armour.
Or you can ignore all that and craft a tonne of cheap explosives and just throw them at anything that looks at you funny, after all they brought swords to a 'nuke' fight.
I ended up practising with them a lot as weapons/bombs are scarce in the challenge I set for myself in my latest play through.
Often a single upgrade to level 2 makes the forms themselves infinitely more useful and usable, while being incredibly cheap to boot. ie : a longer Charge, bigger capacity for and auto-recharge in water of ammo or the ability to add thrust to your glide.
Also, I always see comments of people never upgrading the Yokai Forms, probably because because the wording for their secondary boosts aren't all that clear, especially in the case of the First Form, with it reading like it would only add 0.1 ATK, not multiply ATK by an additional 10% per level.
In my case, I only have the Hero's Sword you get from the ruins, it's only +8 ATK but with my First Form sitting at Level 5, that changes it to a +12 ATK.
A +4 buff might not sound huge, but it's letting me do 50% more damage and is roughly equal to the basic ATK buffs you can get from food, plus it stacks with them.
In fact, combine it with the buff from Beer and you're now rocking a +20 ATK, which helps shred the tougher enemies found deeper in the ruins.
