Currencies in Kenshi
I was thinking about the reasons for the major factions to have not adopted their own form of currencies in the time since the fall of the second empire, and am wondering why they haven't. Here's my speculations;

The Holy Nation was my first thought; Cats bear the name of Cat-Lon, the Chief founder of the second empire that enslaved, brutalized and committed genocide against the humans. Surely the descendants of their human slave force would want to come up with their own form of currency. Maybe they don't even know Cat-Lon exists? The Ashlands are extremely far from holy nation territory, and broadly speaking their citizens are not fond of reading scientific or historical books. That and most humans currently alive can't remember the atrocities of the second empire, it's been over a millennium after all.

The Shek Kingdom I can understand, they're not all that prone to building or maintaining infrastructure or complex systems. And being that they also don't remember the second empire, it's probably just a convenience to have a currency already made and available.

The United cities I'd think would want to make their own currency because they can more easily control it's value, allowing the Trader's Guild inflate/deflate it at their will, or safeguard it's value against rise or falls in the supply of it's goods, like food, water, slaves etc.

Hiver colonies probably don't care. If it's true their lifespans are shorter than even humans, then they're even less likely to mind the history of the continent and the exploitation of their ancestors by the Skeletons. They're also pretty isolated from other societies, as is their preference.

As for the skeletons, a lot of them are wracked with guilt over the treatment of humans during the first and second empire, many choosing to become thralled or resetting their memories to forget the horror. Those left would see the history of the second empire reflected in the cats, the same cats they may have used to buy human slaves 1,000 years ago, and perhaps feel the shame wash over them anew. I think the major reason they never created their own currency is because of how scattered they all are, and are the minority in every settlement their kind resides in, the one exception being black desert city which, does not have many skeletons living in it. What's most likely is they just don't have the numbers.

I'm interested in hearing anyone else's speculation!

I think the biggest factor is the Traders Guild, and the history of the UC.

Imo it's quite likely that the UC is originally the remnants of the Second Empire, whether originally rebels or loyalists of Cat-Lon, their cities are very likely some of the same ones that Cat-Lon's empire held. Even after his fall, there is no logical reason to throw out the currency everyone has and uses, especially given it was probably a very tumultuous time and resources needed to be directed wisely.

So then, assuming the UC just decided to keep using the currency they've always used for as long as anyone had been alive, the Traders Guild once it was founded would certainly do the same.

And the Guild is notable that it trades with virtually everyone. The HN welcomes them in, despite being at war with the UC. The Shek even trade with them despite hating the Guild so much. Not to mention all the backroom connections between them and various criminal factions. It seems natural that the Guild would spread their currency, and that others would willingly keep using it so they could continue doing business easily.

Hivers are more recent additions to the land, so odds are the currency was pretty solidified once they got here, no reason for them to use anything else, especially when they don't trade locally at all. Money is only for use with no-hives, so might as well use no-hive money.

Skeletons don't really have a government or anything, nothing to enforce or enact a change in currency. They're just individual people, and they'd use what they already have for what trade they do.

Having different currencies is bad for trade. It requires currency exchange.
From a practial point of view there is no advantage in introducing a new currency.
I agree with Shidan that the Traders Guild is an important factor, because they represent a unifying factor in trading with cats.

It is more likely that trade with a single currency is replaced by universal barter.
But there is no reason to not trade with cats, if cats are fully available to everyone.

Yes, they are called Cats after Cat-Lon, even though it became an insane ruler and killed much of its people, it was highly respected, and as the guy above me said, it'd be bad for trade if every nation had its own currency. Also the game dev probably didn't want to give you 15 different tabs on the GUI dedicated to how much of each currency you had.

Cat-Lon is an its because Cat-Lon is a robot, they don't have gendered, although they can be programmed, but in the grand scheme of things, he is machine
