Question about Garru pets
What should I do with him so he doesn't starve to death? I mean, I don't have my own base and I can't set up a feeding trough. I don't want to leave any of my characters at home to keep Garru fed, because I don't have many people for battles and they all need to level up their combat skills. I also don't want to carry him around everywhere; I need to constantly keep an eye on him to make sure nothing happens.

While I was trying to figure out why he wasn't eating at all (his pack was somehow in the way), I saw an idea somewhere about simply throwing a bunch of food on the ground and placing Garru next to it. A feeding trough without a feeding trough. I tried that, throwing in a bunch of bad meat and some other stuff, but at some point it all disappeared. Or did Garru just eat it all in one go? I once threw a stack of cactus sandwiches at his feet (six of them), and he ate them all in one go... He had just over 200 hunger, so two would have been enough, but where would all six go?

Either I'm doing something wrong, or I'm missing something. Do I really need to build a base to avoid the hassle of maintaining Garru?

The simplest solution is max your hunger option to 8 (going "low" makes it worse).
Dropped items have a ridiculously long life on the ground, as long as you're in the cell/chunk you dropped it in. It may be a terrain/collision issue, drop it on flat ground, keep the Hungry Hippo there with a hold option, then wait.
If you're already using the animal backpack mods and this is a new issue, move it around in the load order. There's several guides on mod load orders.

Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by "max your hunger option to 8 (going "low" makes it worse)". Are you talking about the settings when creating a game?

That must be the problem with the missing food. After all, I'm going quite far from the home...

No, I don't use any backpack mods. This is a vanilla issue. While an animal has its pack on, it doesn't eat food dropped in front of it; it picks it up and puts it in its pack. It doesn't eat the food from there; it just sits in its backpack. It also doesn't eat from the backpack of a nearby character, even though the "share food" option is enabled.

Well... looks like I'll have to get rid of my old Betsy... too much trouble for which I'm not yet ready. It's time to assign her a great adventure with an equally great, albeit sad, ending :DSTskull:

Do you have "fast zone hopping" enabled? If it's disabled it might be why the stuff on the ground is despawning when the squad you're focussing on leaves the area (Not quite sure how it works).

Animals cannot eat from their own bags, but they sure can eat from another animal's and their owner's bag. You just have to make sure the people are using actual bags tho. The main inventory does not suffice.

Oh, I didn't even see this function. In theory this should really help. Although this is a double-edged sword, it can be stressful for PCs.

Very strange... I definitely filled the bag (not inventory) with food and Garru did not eat from it, even close... Ok, I'll try again later. But you also said that Garru can eat from each other’s packs. In theory, you can buy another Garru, stuff them both with food and put them side by side?

Thanks for the answers! It is possible that you saved the digital old lady. I almost sent her to the next world on a great journey
