Tomb Raider II

Dualshock 4 unresponsive through Big Picture's DS4 compatibility mode
Hi, all.

I've successfully used my official DualShock 4 controller for other Steam games using the DualShock 4 configuration available through the Big Picture mode.

However, I'm not able to use it for Tomb Raider II, as it's completely unresponsive, even when adding a user configuration which maps the controller buttons to the keyboard keys to match the game's default controls.

What may be causing this issue? Can you guys help me out?

I'm open to use an external software such as DS4Windows, but, as my DS4 worked without any issues with other games, I want to avoid recurring to non-Steam programs.

Cheers!

Try disabling the Steam Overlay for the game.
(right-click on the game in your Library list, select Properties, then un-check the option for "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game")

The Steam Overlay does not work properly with these old Tomb Raider games (which use an old DirectX version). This apparently prevents Steam from using the game-specific controller configuration, and may instead cause the game to respond to Steam's "Desktop Configuration". Turning the overlay off seems to fix this problem.

If you want to actually fix the overlay, try using dgVoodoo2.

That actually work! Disabling it made the controller work with the Big Picture keymapping as defined, although, some strange effects happened when pressing some keys (like, the mapping for those keys would stop working and would change to another one).

Thank you for that!

It worked for the 360 controller as well.
Thanks!

With TR3, sometimes the default keyboard controls can disappear, and the configuration may need to be reset. Delete this file before playing:
...\Steam\steamapps\common\TombRaider (III)\config.txt

no need though, at the end (as i did with Tr3 too), i re-configured the commands in-game did that and that and here we go, Lara goes back and forward with no issues^^

You may also need to disable any "compatibility mode" set for the game application file:

I discovered what the problem was. After I unchecked Steam overlay. I went into the game, and put the controls in manually through the main Menu. The game works with my controller now :)

Quick fix for people using the automated patch and that want to fix the steam overlay + steam controller settings. Go to game folder. Right click on Tomb2.exe and deactivate compatibility settings. Now Steam overlay and steam gamepad support will work just like TR1,3,4,5
