I know there's a way to trial things directly from the website, but average Steam users like to stick to Steam exclusively, that's a nice way to sort of leverage a trial system but monetize it.
The company chooses whatever monetization model that maximizes profit and minimizes risks. The price was set by the market. Customers decide purchase or not.
ED doesn't host game servers, events, or "ladders." Irace has to. There are no extra fixed costs beside development for them to cover. Aside from subscriptions and memberships, irace also sells tracks and cars to subscribers. Membership covers "base" contents.
Ib4 ED says no to subscriptions. It was not considered. ED's plan is to sell contents (planes, maps, assets, and upgrades).
A lot of gamers come and go in this game frequently. there about 2k-ish players "online" per day. Many player only play the game once a while. There may not be enough active users to maintain consistent income flow via monthly subscription. so the risk is high, and income might be low for ED.
Competition between companies/products improves service quality or saves money for consumers. Not a "monetization model." The company always maximizes profits choose whatever model serve that goal.
If ED goes sub model. It may become too expensive, and end up only able to target institution, prof, and some sim nuts like p3d.
ED has stated they've no plans to change their monetization. Probably because how do you offer value to individuals like me with several purchases, already. Would I lose access to things I have? That'd really piss me off. Would I get special servers I only get as a subscriber? Why bother, I always play on private servers. Special skins? I download what I want from the files section, anyways.
A subscription would require aspects of the game be shutdown and access denied if it were to be made of any worth and that'd alienate so many. It is a ship that has sailed.
And, attracting new audiences doesn't seem to be ED's goal. They want an audience that likes a higher fidelity study sim experience. They do not want the War Thunder crowd. They seem content with what they have at the present. Expansion and growth for them is desired to be slow and steady.
It is what it is, DCS is not a live service game and cannot be.
