Cursor too small in games
I'm running Linux Mint on an Alienware Desktop with an RTX 4080 attached via displayport to a WUHD monitor (5120x2160). I'm having frustrating issues with the mouse pointer being extremely small in games, regardless of what UI scaling or mouse cursor size I set in the OS itself. This happens regardless of whether the game is running full screen or windowed.

I also am having the same issue streaming from my Windows 11 box. The cursor in the streamed game (or even in the OS itself if I connect via settings) is ridiculously small, even if both the Windows machine and Linux machine have the UI scaling cranked high and the mouse cursor size set to max.

An in-game mouse cursor size is usually determined by the game, not the OS. Setting a lower in-game resolution with no scaling enabled may increase cursor size, but GE-Proton has an auto FSR-1 that kicks in when you use a lower resolution with no scaling enabled ... not sure if steam proton ever did that.

I have the same exact issue when just looking at the Windows desktop after connecting through Remote Play. (No game involved)

(I.e. look at the Windows machine directly, cursor == massive. Go to remote play settings on the Linux with identical desktop resolution/scaling on the same monitor, connect, look at the desktop, cursor == teeny weeny.)

Oh, this is strictly a remote play issue ... the first paragraph seemed to be just on one PC, not involving streaming. I haven't used streaming in years, but maybe the remote play discussions will have answers or at least some ideas ... https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/groups/homestream/discussions

It isn't strictly remote play. This also happens in games that run locally. Same game, with the same graphics settings on the same monitor has a minuscule mouse cursor on running locally on Linux and a large one running locally on Windows. I bring up Remote Play as this implies it's issue with steam/proton/etc. not the individual game. (The problem is identical in all games.)

I did try running winecfg, and saw the identical small cursor, which, if I changed the DPI settings, finally looked decent. But I can't seem to get that change to effect games themselves. This may be because I just don't know where to set it from

It's not an issue with resolution. Both machines are set to 5120 by 2160. Also, it occurs even when streaming is not in the mix so it isn't about a streaming mismatch.

On Linux Mint, I can have a windowed game, and the cursor changes from large to small as I move it over the game and large again as I move it off the game. (A game with no cursor settings, that does not exhibit this behavior on Windows.)

Everything points to proton setting the cursor to some default small size.

Interestingly, if I use winecfg on one game to "emulate a virtual desktop" to an arbitrary resolution, and run the game as a window, the cursor gets small when it is on the virtual desktop area and then big again when it is over the game itself.
