Can I use SteamOS as a desktop system?
Hello, I wonder, can I use SteamOS without the big picture mode? So that I can use the browser, install Discord or other games outside steam?

Basically reap the benefits of games compability under SteamOS while using it as a desktop system.

I wouldn't recommend an immutable OS like SteamOS or Bazzite for general use. They're fiddly to modify (driver modules) and can break easily if you install software that's not on Flatpak. It also tends to break the (non-Flatpak) software you installed on the next OS update. If you only want Steam, a browser, Discord and nothing else, it will probably work but if you want the freedom to install any software and update you like, then it's not the right choice.

Fedora or manjaro is something I recommend. But you can go for another, and if you want steam os desktop just go with gnome.

SteamOS is an immutable OS and that will come with some caveats. You are better off with something like Fedora Workstation 43 (Gnome or KDE version) if you want a full blown desktop experience with being able to multitask and game. I would also suggest COSMIC but it won't be stable until December later this year.

If you want discord on Linux with proper screensharing use Equibop with Equicord Flatpak from Flathub.

you can try Holo Os, clone of steam os 3. im not sure if its legal though :steamfacepalm:

For the average user, using an immutable distro won't cause any issues at all. And yes, it is a perfectly functional desktop experience.

You boot into big picture mode for gaming, but with like 2 or 3 clicks you can switch to Desktop mode.
