I've unistalled steam and removed the entire ~/.Steam/ directory, then reinstalled it. It fixed the issue but it can hardly be consider 'a proper procedure'.

Keeping your games in an external steam library is always a good idea to avoid this, and to avoid some bugs too. It also helps in case you decide to reinstall your OS, you just have to re-add the library instead of downloading everything again.

This thread could be a saviour for me. I tried to associate the librabries for both operative systems, Windows and Ubuntu and it is a nightmare. I believe Windows has damaged both my cell phone and its own ssd with its bs shennanigans.
