Issue with controller joystick diagonal movement

I'm using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to play this game and it works almost perfectly. I can run up/down left/right, but whenever I try to run diagonally, the character walks really slowly... Can anyone help me with this?

I have tried programs like x360ce and WiinUPro, and the emulated XBox 360 Controller works perfectly. This presents a new problem, however. The game registers input from both the Direct Input controller and the XBox Controller it emulates. So if I want to play with a proper joystick, I have to play in perpetual two-player mode, controlling both players with the same controller...
